About Bear Creek Cabin (Beaverhead-deerlodge National Forest, MT)
The Bear Creek Cabin, located at the base of the west slope of the Madison Range, allows visitors to experience southwestern Montana's vast wilderness areas, including wide open fields and a variety of nearby mountain ranges. Situated on the Trail Fork of Bear Creek, the cabin offers a scenic location to enjoy activities such as hunting, skiing, snowshoeing, as well as hiking and horseback riding on nearby trails. A smaller cabin, Bear Creek Bunkhouse, is located about 100 ft to the west and is also on the rental program.
The cabin is used as an administrative site in the summer and fall months, but is open to the public between December and April. The site can be accessed by vehicle, however, a portion of the road may be muddy or snow-covered, as it is not always plowed. Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities, including water.

Bear Creek Cabin offers a charming and well-stocked environment, with a functional wood stove and a sense of history. It is situated in a beautiful location with easy access to various trails. However, some amenities like utensils and firewood were lacking, and the wood stove may not adequately heat the cabin in winter.
Cabin was in great shape, very clean. The wood stove is too small to adequately heat the entire cabin without the fireplace operable. Recommend up grading the wood stove.

This is probably my 4th year coming here. Love it and this year it was even cleaner and better organized then in years past. There is still some chairs etc that should be tossed but it’s way better. However since the cost per night has been increased substantially I feel I can be more critical.
The outhouse is a joke. It’s extremely old and we were there in January and it reeked! No lime or anything to subdue the odor. This just encourages people to defecate outside the outhouse. It’s disgusting and no one‘s gonna walk to the other one down the road so you should just put a nice one at the cabin. Either that, or don’t complain about the toilet paper that people leave here and there.

Due to lack of snow the cabin was very accessible. The cabin was clean, at least swept. There are only two forks, a cabin that accommodates 4 should have at least 4 forks. Lots of fire wood was avaliable and wood boxes were full. The only problem was odor from something dead in the crawl space. When the cabin warmed up we detected the smell. We have have used this cabin many times and will continue to in the future.

Overall, it exceeded my expectations. Recent snow storm helped fill our snow craving. Signs at nearest trailhead noted that the wildlife management areas are closed during certain times of the year (winter), so look into that before you plan to hike.
