About West Fork Cabin (s of Ennis)

West Fork Cabin is a small, secluded cabin in the mountains of southwestern Montana, located high in the Gravelly Range. The cabin was built in 1928 as an intermediate station for patrolling grazing allotments. The area is home to a variety of wildlife and offers numerous trails for hikers, equestrians and off-road vehicle riders during warmer months and snowmobilers in the winter. The cabin is available from July 1 through March 31. It can typically be accessed by vehicle; however, a portion of the roadway may be muddy or snow-covered, requiring four-wheel drive or chains. Beginning around mid-October, snow may make access very difficult. In winter, over snow vehicles are necessary to reach the cabin, but are only permitted after December 1. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.  West Fork Cabin is closed on Wednesdays for administrative purposes, July - November.

What Guests Are Saying

West Fork Cabin offers a clean and remote getaway, with easy access to the beautiful Gravellys. However, directions to the cabin can be unclear, leading to challenges in reaching it, especially in winter conditions. Despite some issues with access and maintenance, many guests have enjoyed multiple stays and appreciate the natural surroundings.

Horrible, nonexistent directions to the cabin!!! Was on the phone for 30 minutes with a forestry ranger who could not figure it out and together we tried to figure the route out on All Trails. We never got to the cabin. According to the route that we figured out it would be two hours of driving once we got off of 287. About 5 miles into this two hour drive, there was so much snow pack on the road we were sliding all over in an F250 4x4. So, so disappointing. If there is not a more specific and manageable route to get to the cabin, then this cabin should not be available for rent until at least June 1st. Very frustrating and a waste of our time and money. Lost two nights of reservation and a very disappointed 12 y/o boy.

Cabin was very clean. Outhouse was decent but Hill to it very icy so wear your boots. Lots of wood split and ready. No issues.

Great spot, but tough to get to-- flat tire on truck due to sharp rock 2 miles from cabin. Too bad that fire took out trees to the west of the cabin to keep it from being in shade in afternoon.

This July (2024) was our 4th year at the West Fork cabin and we've enjoyed every stay there. Extremely good, rather remote location allowing access to the wonders of the Gravellys. It would be nice if users paid a bit more attention to leaving the place cleaned up for the next occupants.

We visited October 27th-30th, 2022. The road down to the cabin had a lot of snow, we got stuck on the spur past the gate and had to dig out/chain up. Pretty hairy getting down off the Gravelly Range Road to the cabin (about a mile)- would recommend chains on all 4 tires if you feel confident or snow mobiles (it snowed about 18 inches a week earlier). With this much snow you're at the end of the road (nobody was driving past the junction to the cabin road). This time of year, come in from the Centennial Divide Road up the Ruby River drainage (west side of Gravelly's), then up Eureka Basin road.

No peanut butter left for setting mouse traps, would recommend bringing a jar and leaving it in the table/cupboard. The propane lamp is still there, but need to bring propane for the lamp and stove. Evidence of mice but they were going for boot insulation, as we had our food secure. Maybe consider bringing a chainsaw because many of the wood rounds are too long for the smaller stove box. Cleaning supplies, paper towels, and some toilet paper was available, along with pots and pans.
We had a great time at the cabin, it's very cozy and they installed new floors recently which are nice.

Good Cabin. Plenty of fire wood stocked for now if you want a fire! It was warm so we did not use the stove or outside fire ring.
Lots of dead flies in the windows. Would recommend taking a battery operated vacuum if u have one. The gas lantern that was there before was missing. Luckily we brought a battery operated one from home. There is a coleman stove to use for cooking if u need it. It's stalked with Plenty of pots and other utensils. Saw a few deer, antelope, elk, and 1 moose while there.
No mice issues but they are there. Guessing do to it being warm and we didn't keep any food in the cabin, they had no need to visit. Sleeps 3 with a bunk bed and a single with supplied mattresses.

We had a wonderful 5 days in the West Fork cabin, although there was considerable smoke from various fires, mostly a great distance from the Gravellys. The cabin is just right for 2 people. We bring everything we need, including pots, pans, water (for cooking, drinking), dishes, silverware, propane stove, propane lantern, etc. There are some dishes and pots, we prefer our own. There are mice and we would recommend bringing some traps and cheese/peanut butter; we got 4 mice while we were there. Doubt if there is any surefire way to exclude them from a cabin like this. A small spring runs some yards down the hill into an old concrete containment. Recommend bringing a couple of 5 gallon buckets to get washing/bathing water (and a pot to dip water from the containment to the buckets). Outhouse is accessible via a small, short trail with a considerable uphill grade at the end (not a problem for folks who are regular walkers/hikers). We really liked the remoteness of this cabin and, being off the main drag, traffic is close to zero (we saw one vehicle during the 5 days, but were gone typically from 10am to 5pm). Would definitely go back again!
