About Downstream (MT)

Downstream Campground is located just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana. Recreation enthusiasts and sportsmen enjoy the beauty of Fort Peck Lake's 1.5 mi of shoreline. A variety of high quality outdoor activities are available, including camping, boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and wildlife viewing. Fort Peck Dam, which impounds Fort Peck Lake is the first dam built in the upper Missouri River Basin. The area surrounding Fort Peck was first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, and the pristine natural condition of the river and surrounding area awed the renowned explorers. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the Fort Peck project in 1933, thousands of people from all over the country migrated to Montana during the midst of the Great Depression in hopes of earning a living. Today, Fort Peck Lake is a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing, wildlife viewing and other countless outdoor recreation opportunities. We have been comimg to Downstream MT for 20+ years, stay for 14 days and have always enjoyed our stay. The personnel are so friendly and helpful. The bathrooms and shower facilities are clean and well kept. Racoons seem to be an ongoing issue but we are always notified of their presence. They are crafty critters and know how to open coolers.

We stayed in Loop C with our 32 ft trailer. Very nice campground. Very pretty location, clean showers, good amounts of both shade and sun. Very quiet in the evening and at night. We saw a few deer and rabbits wandering around. We used the RV dump station when we left, the host told us that the potable water had just been restored so we filled up on fresh water at the same time. We would definitely stay here again.

First I must say Rec.gov ‘s information about electric at the site was wrong. Said it was only 50 amp. I only have 30 and there was. Nowhere to buy a converter. When Ingot to the campground the host bent over backwards trying to lan me his amp converter. But when I got to the site there was 30 amp anyway. So Inam rating Doenstream as excellent because of the service attitude of the host

Stopped here for the night. Rangers were helpful and friendly. Bathrooms with flush toilets and showers were clean. Party shelters have electrical outlets if you're in a tent site and get desperate.

Downstream campground is accessible via Montana State Highway 24, which runs through Fort Peck. The nearest major road access is approximately 5 miles to the west.
