Downstream Campground is located just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana. Recreation enthusiasts and sportsmen enjoy the beauty of Fort Peck Lake's 1.5 mi of shoreline. A variety of high quality outdoor activities are available, including camping, boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and wildlife viewing.
Fort Peck Dam, which impounds Fort Peck Lake is the first dam built in the upper Missouri River Basin. The area surrounding Fort Peck was first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, and the pristine natural condition of the river and surrounding area awed the renowned explorers. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the Fort Peck project in 1933, thousands of people from all over the country migrated to Montana during the midst of the Great Depression in hopes of earning a living. Today, Fort Peck Lake is a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing, wildlife viewing and other countless outdoor recreation opportunities.

Downstream Campground is a beautiful and well-maintained facility with spacious, clean sites and friendly staff, making it a highly recommended destination for campers. Guests appreciate the clean bathrooms, quiet atmosphere, and nearby recreational activities, including biking and fishing. While some noted issues like mosquito presence and occasional water access problems, overall experiences were overwhelmingly positive, with many planning to return.
A real disappointment based on the campground environment, maps and description.
This was a great place for kids (or adults) to ride bikes!
No real access to river/reservoir from the campground and it's below the "dam." Maps showed trails and water we couldn't find, as the area was so overgrown with brush. Additionally, waters edge was not accessible due to lack of maintenance on trails to downstream river.
Campsites close to each other even though the campground is quite large. Additionally there were many more vehicles that that we expected, with 5-6 vehicles - trucks, camp trailers and boat trailers parked all over sites and into the roadway,
Nearby campers had 4-dogs off leash, had to call campground host...
Last minute reservation, got in for two days, but in two different spots. Both space 56 and 83 were good, clean and level. We checked out the showers, clean, dry floors (outside of the shower itself) am
Nd the building was air conditioned to keep you comfortable while dressing. Lots of walking/biking paths, fishing docks and a disc golf course. Electric only sites (for us), very nice, would definitely recommend, but make an early reservation so you don't have to move!
Spacious campground, level, no underbrush, showers, friendly helpful staff, and best of all I got to tent camp in an RV slot and plug in my Tesla. Lotsa places won’t let you do that.
One problem experienced was that I booked Downstream in a different state by accident. When we went to register the person at the office was helpful in giving me a number to cancel and rebook and fortunately we were able to get another site that suited us. She said this is not the first time this has happened. We liked the site but not used to the deer flies and biting flies. We enjoyed the dam view and walk around the ponds as well as listening to the birds. We only were there for one night
Beautiful and clean campsite. Just needs water and a few more dump locations and it would be perfect. Thanks campgrounds staff for maintaining this nice destination park!
Downstream campground is accessible via Montana State Highway 24, which runs through Fort Peck. The nearest major road access is approximately 5 miles to the west.
