About Downstream (MT)

Downstream Campground is located just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana. Recreation enthusiasts and sportsmen enjoy the beauty of Fort Peck Lake's 1,500 miles of shoreline. A variety of high quality outdoor activities are available, including camping, boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and wildlife viewing.  Fort Peck Dam, which impounds Fort Peck Lake is the first dam built in the upper Missouri River Basin. The area surrounding Fort Peck was first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, and the pristine natural condition of the river and surrounding area awed the renowned explorers. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the Fort Peck project in 1933, thousands of people from all over the country migrated to Montana during the midst of the Great Depression in hopes of earning a living. Today, Fort Peck Lake is a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing, wildlife viewing and other countless outdoor recreation opportunities.   For more information, visit the Fort Peck Project Website or call 406-526-3411.

Firstly, the toilet (the one for all sites in this loop) across from the site was nearly unusable due to its stench. Like something had died and was rotting in it. I saw a woman come out of it and wretch. Totally unacceptable.

Overall, nice campground. Busy the night I was there. I had a 2P tent and had to pitch as much of the floor as I could on the picnic table's concrete pad to have a level surface to sleep on using my two sleeping pads. Site itself, does not offer a good, level piece of ground to have a tent on it. The high ground is where the picnic table sits, and the surrounding areas of the site, are the low areas. I was lucky to have my tent where it was, as thunderstorms came through during the night. A lot of wind, and a good shot of rain.

There's better sites in this loop, and other restrooms to use out side of it.

Great staff, clean showers. The sites were well-spaced, and the nearby interpretive center for the dam was my kids' favorite part. I would absolutely camp here again!

This seemed like a nice campground. The site was nice and spacious. We got there after the check-in area was closed but were able to grab our reservation ticket and find out site easily enough. There seemed to be some website confusion as another couple was trying to set up in our space when we arrived, but they moved on when we told them it was our spot.
This spot wasn’t too far from the bathroom, but definitely far enough from other sites to feel private.
