About Strawberry Cabin

Explore a magnificent recreation and wildlife resource at the doorstep of Montana's Capital City. From prairie to alpine, mayflies to mountain goats, and scenic driving to expert climbing routes -- the Elkhorns you will discover a diverse landscape! Built in 1941, Strawberry Cabin lies at the top of Strawberry Butte (6.1 ft) in the heart of the Elkhorn Mountains. The combination of lookout and log cabin are typical of this period. The cabin is an excellent example of a C-46 one room cabin plan, which was designed by William Fox. This cabin style is one of the standard building plans used for housing personnel working at intermediate stations and at lookouts. The C-46 design offers distinctive characteristics of ventral saddle notches and log ends finished in "chopper cut" style, which symbolizes rustic Forest Service log architecture of the second half of the 1930 and early 1940s.

This cabin was great! We were actually able to drive all the way to the locked gate though it was pretty sketchy with all the snow so would maybe not recommend. Lovely snowshoe in, good views. Some snowmobilers did leave us a nasty note on our truck about ‘blocking’ the very closed and gated road (never mind there was plenty of space for snowmobiles to go by, and that they aren’t even allowed up to the cabin), threatening that “next time we’d get towed,” so beware I guess. It went down to almost negative double-digits and the wood stove kept the cabin toasty-warm! Waited for it to get up to 0 degrees and snowshoed out. The propane lamp appeared to be broken FYI, didn’t want to mess with it and find out, so definitely bring your own light(s). Really neat fold-down tables and cool cabin design. Overall, another great USFS cabin!

Nice cabin, wood stove kept it very warm. There were quite a few full propane tanks. Also trash that people did not pack out. Hike is somewhat of a climb, but it was worth dragging a sled in, the way out was able to ride the sled with our gear out.
