About Cummings Cabin

Located 8.5 miles east of Lincoln, Montana, Cummings Cabin is a historic structure, representative of the old mining cabins that dotted the countryside in the greater Lincoln area around 1910. The cabin has been determined eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the cabin is a rustic getaway for guests seeking relaxation and recreation in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The cabin has a hand pump for water, propane range, propane lights, a wood stove, silverware, dishes, cleaning supplies, outdoor fire ring, 2 full size beds and one twin bed.  In the snow free months guests can drive directly to the cabin, but in the winter be prepared to snow shoe or ski up to a mile to get to the cabin.

Definitely a rustic place in a secluded area- and our family loved it. Great to connect with the history and beauty of that area. It is a comfortable place for four and the facilities are great. If you're a foodie- bring your own favorite cookware. Split some wood, play some games. hike/ski/snow mobile around the area, watch your head, and sleep well. Oh, and no phones and cell coverage is actually good. Don't know if anyone realizes that.

What we'll never be able to understand, and we see at so many of these cabins, is how people can leave garbage everywhere in the surrounding area by the fire pit, etc....

Wonderful cabin! Absolutely perfect for a getaway to unplug/unwind. Great area to walk/hike near cabin. We went early March. Be aware of the last 500 feet of driveway to the cabin. It's all slush, ice and mud and deceiving. 4x4 only. Other than that - we will be returning.

We had an awesome weekend getaway here! Such a beautiful area, and it got decent sunshine even with the trees. The wood stove was wonderful, propane lights were fun, and pumping water made us newly appreciative of indoor plumbing. There was enough snow to XC ski on the local trails, but we were still able to drive the truck to about 200yrds from the cabin. There were lots of signs of mice (droppings) when we arrived. Would recommend bringing your own cooking equipment if you’re driving in to make sure everything is clean. Also, for future guests- please empty the water buckets underneath the sink before you leave! The folks who stayed before us did not, so the water was very moldy/nasty when we got there. Otherwise a wonderful stay. We can’t wait to come back!

The pictures do not do this place justice!! The cabin is bright and cheerful inside, and what a treat to have a separate kitchen and bedroom! The water is uphill of the house, which was a challenge in the icy, windy, winter storm conditions, but we were still able to pump and transport water successfully in below freezing temps (it was probably 10-35 degrees F for our trip). The wood stove and propane lights gave a beautiful glow as we were able to sit back and relax while the oven cooked us dinner! We loved exploring all the trails behind the cabin, and even followed a moose's trail down the creek next to the cabin. Most luxurious forest service cabin trip so far, highly recommended!!

Directions to the cabin were a little confusing. Follow the blue diamond all the way to the cabin. Great covered porch and lovely 3 room cabin. Three beds total for a total of 5 people along with 2 fireplaces. Cabin was clean and there was plenty of firewood. The locks were a little sticky, had to give them a strong pull to release them and access to the propane shutoff valve was tricky to get to with the snow melt from the roof. Beautiful area!

Beautiful spot, we had great snowy weather and did a nice hike up the ridge behind the cabin. Thank you forest service!

The area is beautiful and secluded with the exception of a few 4 wheelers and a jeep using the public access road next to the cabin. It was nice to be able step right out the door and go for a hike. Woodstove worked great. Also nice that there is a water pump and clean outhouse nearby. I will definitely stay there again.
