It was a very beautiful trip to the cabin by way of Drummond and Phillipsburg. Going out the other way (north along Rock Creek) had its beautiful moments, but the road is very full of potholes and we could only go 5-10 mph. The house was much nicer than expected, but the old double beds were a bit uncomfortable. We might consider bringing our own cots next time and there is plenty of room to do so. A beautiful place to immerse yourself in another world!

Love this place! So wonderful for a quiet retreat from the Missoula area. Just bring lots of water and some blankets. The kitchen is well stocked with pots/plates cups. Inside slippers are nice to have too. The road is quite bumpy if you do the 29 mi south on rock creek. We do it in our Toyota Matrix. Coming from Phillipsburg is much smoother but takes 25-35 minutes longer.

Per the Missoula USFS in Missoula they advised not to travel the Rockcreek road due to snow.

Getting There

From Missoula, Montana, travel east on Interstate 90 for about 20 mi to exit 126. Drive south on Rock Creek Road for about 29 mi. Rock Creek Road is a hardened surface for 12 mi and the remainder is a gravel, single-lane road, with intermittent pull-outs. It is not suitable for RVs or trailers, due to blind turns, steep grades and narrow width. Maps are available online or for purchase by calling the Missoula Ranger District.
During late fall and early spring, take the Drummond exit 153 on Interstate 90 and follow Scenic Highway 1 south toward Philipsburg. One mile north of Philipsburg, turn west on State Road 348. Travel 13 mi west, cross Rock Creek and turn north onto Rock Creek Road. Continue 12 mi to the homestead. The road is plowed within 3 mi of the cabin. A four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with chains is recommended. Travelers may also want to bring an alternate form of transportation (skis or snowshoes) to complete the route.
Highway access
Hogback Homestead is accessible via Interstate 90, with the nearest exit being 126 located approximately 20 miles away. An alternate route can be taken using the Drummond exit 153, which is also on Interstate 90.
Policies & Rules
General
- Group size limit: 8
- No camping
- Pets are not allowed in this facility or on the property
- From March 1 to Dec. 31, all food and attractants must be secured from bears and other wildlife
- This facility is located in a remote area; before making a reservation, become aware of bear, water and weather safety
- Upon reservation renters will receive gate and cabin combination codes via email. During late fall and early spring, renters are encouraged to bring a lighter to heat the lock tumblers as they have a tendency to freeze
- All garbage, food and personal belongings must be packed out
- Livestock is not allowed at the site
- Off-road vehicles are not allowed unless they are street legal
- Cleaning supplies, cooking utensils, cookware and other amenities may be available, but are not guaranteed; call for availability, (406) 329-3814.
