Cabin was very comfortable, and the outdoor shower area behind the woodshed building was a great bonus. Having the propane lights and stove/oven was also a great bonus. We encountered no mice, which was a relief from stays at some other cabins that were overrun with them. Having access to Rock Creek just a short walk away as well as hiking was the icing on the cake.

Second visit. Great cabin with rustic but good facilities. Not for those who want a pampered stay, but great for those who are okay going without a hot shower for a few days and who don't need to be connected to the interweb.

Great visit! Nice to leave the windows open and hear Hogback Creek all day and night (only left the upstairs windows open at night). The splitting maul was pretty sharp, made it very easy to split wood (at some other cabins the maul was so dull it bounced off!). Very comfortable cabin, great area to fish, hike, and hang out.

I had not been here in 10 years. It was just as I remembered it. A real treasure. The place was clean and well maintained. The ranger was helpful with information about the road access.

Quite comfortable and plenty of wood for the stove. Probably would bring sheets/blankets instead of a sleeping bag if I come again.

Per the Missoula USFS in Missoula they advised not to travel the Rockcreek road due to snow.

Love this place! So wonderful for a quiet retreat from the Missoula area. Just bring lots of water and some blankets. The kitchen is well stocked with pots/plates cups. Inside slippers are nice to have too. The road is quite bumpy if you do the 29 miles south on rock creek. We do it in our Toyota Matrix. Coming from Phillipsburg is much smoother but takes 25-35 minutes longer.

United States
From Missoula, Montana, travel east on Interstate 90 for about 20 miles to exit 126. Drive south on Rock Creek Road for about 29 miles. Rock Creek Road is a hardened surface for 12 miles and the remainder is a gravel, single-lane road, with intermittent pull-outs. It is not suitable for RVs or trailers, due to blind turns, steep grades and narrow width. Maps are available online or for purchase by calling the Missoula Ranger District.
During late fall and early spring, take the Drummond exit 153 on Interstate 90 and follow Scenic Highway 1 south toward Philipsburg. One mile north of Philipsburg, turn west on State Road 348. Travel 13 miles west, cross Rock Creek and turn north onto Rock Creek Road. Continue 12 miles to the homestead. The road is plowed within 3 miles of the cabin. A four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with chains is recommended. Travelers may also want to bring an alternate form of transportation (skis or snowshoes) to complete the route.
Hogback Homestead is accessible via Interstate 90, with the nearest exit being 126 located approximately 20 miles away. An alternate route can be taken using the Drummond exit 153, which is also on Interstate 90.
