About Stony Cabin

Stony Cabin is a small primitive cabin that was built in 1914 as a place for Forest Service employees to sleep while working in the area. The cabin is situated close to Stony Creek Road and across the street from Stony Creek Campground. It is not remote but ideal for those who want to stay in a cabin while friends camp across the street at the campground. It provides access to Rock Creek, a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, and Stony Creek. The cabin is within close proximity to a variety of hiking and biking trails also. Guests can enjoy winter recreation on those same trails when there is snow in the area, typically from December until April of each year. The cabin is available all year, offering the opportunity to experience the backcountry of western Montana in all seasons. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle most of the year. There is limited parking in the driveway and trailers are not recommended. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring their own personal amenities.

Summary

AI generated

Stony Cabin is a charming and well-maintained retreat, praised for its cleanliness, cozy atmosphere, and thoughtful amenities. Guests appreciate its ideal location for fishing on Upper Rock Creek and find the campground host, Mike, to be helpful and knowledgeable. However, accessing the cabin from I-90 can be challenging due to a long, potholed road, especially in winter conditions.

This is a rustic cabin with no electricity or water. But charming and convenient. Toilets are across the road in Stony Campground. There is a pump at the campground for water. However, I have heard the water quality is questionable. I have brought in water for the last two years.
The location is great if you are a fisherman. You can access Rock Creek walking from the cabin or drive to one of the many access points along Rock Creek Road.
One note of caution. There is something about the gravel on the road that is hard on tires. I have made 4 trips to the cabin and experienced three flat tires. I think it gets worse as you go north (upstream).

Such a clean cozy cabin! Was impressed by how well stocked it was with a lantern, water jugs, tools, etc. Super convenient having the outhouse right across the road as well :)

The Stony Creek cabin was such a quaint place of refuge: so thoughtfully kept up and well-supplied, in an ideal location as a base camp for excellent fishing on the Upper Rock Cr. Approach from Philipsburg, as the road from I-90 is long, potholed, and dangerous in snow and ice.
