Stony Cabin is a small primitive cabin that was built in 1914 as a place for Forest Service employees to sleep while working in the area. The cabin is situated close to Stony Creek Road and across the street from Stony Creek Campground. It is not remote but ideal for those who want to stay in a cabin while friends camp across the street at the campground.
It provides access to Rock Creek, a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, and Stony Creek. The cabin is within close proximity to a variety of hiking and biking trails also. Guests can enjoy winter recreation on those same trails when there is snow in the area, typically from December until April of each year. The cabin is available all year, offering the opportunity to experience the backcountry of western Montana in all seasons.
The cabin can be accessed by vehicle most of the year. There is limited parking in the driveway and trailers are not recommended. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring their own personal amenities.

Stony Cabin is a charming and well-maintained retreat, praised for its cleanliness, cozy atmosphere, and thoughtful amenities. Guests appreciate its ideal location for fishing on Upper Rock Creek and find the campground host, Mike, to be helpful and knowledgeable. However, accessing the cabin from I-90 can be challenging due to a long, potholed road, especially in winter conditions.
My little family of four absolutely adored this place and we will definitely be returning. The creek is close by. Probably the cleanest vault toilets I’ve seen. Plus the camp host across the street was friendly and helpful.
Stoney Cabin was exactly as portrayed in the Recreation.gov website. There were no surprises here. As such, the cabin and was great. Clean, and kept us out of the rain and cold weather. It was nice to have firewood provided for the cabin stove. We drove up Stoney Creek exploring and looking for sites to fly fish due to the high water run off in Rock Creek. While in route we collected fire wood for the camp fire.
Using the campground facilities: outhouse as well as the fresh water well pump worked out well. Also, the camp ground host was super friendly and informative about the local area. A great guy!

Love this cabin, does the trick for our trip. Nothing fancy, small. It was cold this time so we cooked outside then all dined around the table inside in the warmth. Other than occasionally bumping my head (I’m 6’ 2”) it’s perfect.

Always a great stay at this little cabin. The accommodations are clean, rustic, and yet have some comforts of home provided (i.e., dishware, paper towels, small board games) for people who don't want to bring in all of their own personal gear. There is no stove, lantern, or gas canisters provided, so make sure to pack these in. The wood stove is one of the best I have ever used in a cabin -- will keep you warm at any outside temperature, and has multiple adjustments you can make for burn time and heat. Easy access cabin with some great opportunities to view bighorn sheep, elk, and other wildlife on the hillsides near the cabin. Also in close proximity to hiking trails that provide access into rugged hillsides of the drainage and that can be used throughout the year. Great solitude.
