About Stony Cabin

Stony Cabin is a small primitive cabin that was built in 1914 as a place for Forest Service employees to sleep while working in the area. The cabin is situated close to Stony Creek Road and across the street from Stony Creek Campground. It is not remote but ideal for those who want to stay in a cabin while friends camp across the street at the campground. It provides access to Rock Creek, a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, and Stony Creek. The cabin is within close proximity to a variety of hiking and biking trails also. Guests can enjoy winter recreation on those same trails when there is snow in the area, typically from December until April of each year. The cabin is available all year, offering the opportunity to experience the backcountry of western Montana in all seasons. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle most of the year. There is limited parking in the driveway and trailers are not recommended. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring their own personal amenities.

The Stony Creek cabin is a charming and well-maintained retreat, perfectly situated for fishing on the Upper Rock Creek. Guests appreciate the clean and tidy accommodations, as well as the helpful camp host nearby. Smaller than most cabins you can rent from the USFS in the area, situated in a tight valley between a scree slope and a road, though lightly traveled road. This cabin is of course cheaper than most but better than a tent. It is also a benefit to be able to reserve something in the area as many of the campgrounds along Rock Creek and other nearby areas are first come first serve only. We used this as a guaranteed spot to stay between white water rafting trips so it served it's purpose. Clean cabin and works well for the price. Road in is gravel but in good condition from Phillipsburg. Vault toilet is shared with campground.

The cabin was perfect for our hunting trip and the kids loved. Plenty of firewood and the wood stove kept it very warm.

Quaint little cabin off the grid! Good access during winter months due to Rock creek road having lots of private homes along the corridor.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
