About Sex Peak. Lookout Rental

Sex Peak Lookout is situated in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,772 feet in the Kootenai National Forest. The original lookout was constructed in the early 1920s and replaced by the current lookout in 1948. The peak was named by I.V. Anderson, an early forester, and Harry Baker, supervisor of what was then Cabinet National Forest. It is rumored that they named the peak after their topic of conversation at the time. The lookout is typically open from late June through mid-October and is accessible by car. This rustic retreat offers a few amenities, but guests should pack in most of their own supplies and gear.

The lookout experience is so unique and delightful. We absolutely loved our stay. The wildfire smoke was heavy and diminished the views, but it was still magic!

Great lookout to visit for peace and quiet, magnificent star gazing, and views. The directions/signage at the end was a little confusing since there are two road choices and waze likes the more rustic route.

This location is beautiful. You can't beat the view. The lookout itself was VERY clean, well-stocked with basics e.g. toilet paper, wood & even matches (if we had forgotten) & the twin beds sleep well.

Lookout was in excellent condition. Beds were as pictured, had several games and a few cleaning supplies left behind (I would still bring my own) along with plenty of firewood already chopped for both the stove in the tower and the fire pit. Outhouse was clean. Bugs were not bad. We had no visitors the two days we stayed. Windows, each side has one window that opens. It’s clear the wind has taken a few and damaged them. One window is boarded up. One window doesn’t open. Two windows do open which provides good airflow but the mechanism that holds the window open doesn’t hold the window open anymore.

The cabin was immaculate when we got there-thank you USFS and fellow renters! It didn't have has many games, puzzles, as some lookouts we've stayed at so if that's your thing, you may want to bring your own.

Overall, a good experience. One of the windows (north) was boarded up and in need of replacement or repair to allow better ventilation. Vault toilet was clean and in good order.
