Bessey Recreation Complex is a gem in the middle of the Nebraska Sandhills. We rented the shelter house near the main office, that was close to the bathrooms with showers, the basketball hoops, and the trails throughout the camp ground and tree nursery. Our group brought bicycles and many biked up to the Lookout Tower. It's a great ride up and down and the view at the top is amazing, even though the top of the tower was destroyed in a fire. It's also close to the Middle Loup River that our group enjoyed fishing off the dock, and lounging in the river. Others rode their bikes into Halsey on a paved trail that connects Halsey to the Bessey Recreation Complex. You won't want to miss seeing the stages of seedling trees that the nursery grows that are shipped all over the United States. And the staff we encountered were excellent. You won't want to miss this experience.

Not a quite campground at all. Atvs and dirt bikes running by well till after midnight. Coupled with that, the coal trains run by the front access gate bout every 2 hours. And they do blow the horns throughout the night. The first site we chose had a brand new 30 Amp receptacle installed that was installed wrong and blew our ac fuses twice as soon as we hooked up. Luckily we were given another site that was empty and had good power. Ac worked fine then but noise kept us from sleeping much. Won't be staying here again.

Lovely campground and friendly host. But off road vehicles driving too fast and racing motors
In the campground was very annoying. Spoiled our relaxing evening.

This is a beautiful, remote campground with good facilities and ready access to nice hiking trails in the Sand Hills. Bathrooms/shower facilities are decent but were not too clean when we visited.
The one problem with this place is that it is adjacent to an ATV area. Most of the "campers" were families who were spending the weekend riding around on these noisy, smelly vehicles -- in the park and all over the campground. This pretty much destroys the traditional camping experience for the rest of us.

Campsite was great. I felt like I was camping in the mountains but I was only 4 hours away from home.

Great place, good showers, nice trees, right near the river but those trains.....they roll through and honk their horns about every hour.....all night long.

Nice and clean campground. Well kept and shaded site with electrical outlets. There are free hot showers as well. Only issue is constant train noises.
