About Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Valley of Fires recreation area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin, filling the basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.    The Bureau of Land Management maintains and manages the Valley of Fires Recreation area, which is located four miles west of Carrizozo, NM, on US Highway 380. Valley of Fires offers both camping and day use. 13 of the campsites have 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and water hookups, all sites have picnic shelters, tables, trashcans and barbeque grills. Two of the RV sites are accessible, as are the restrooms. Showers are provided in the main restroom/shower house. An RV dump station is also available. Two group shelters are accessible and available for rental. The 3/4-mile Malpais Nature Trail offers a close-up look of the lava surface.

Beautiful camping sites, and the views were enjoyable. Park was clean and inviting. My only complaint is I think there should be more marked hiking trails. The current one is too short and not that engaging. Just saying.

Since our arrival 4 months ago in Halifax, one of the best campsites. Airy places from each other with beautiful panoramas all around. Clean toilets and shower and all this for affordable price. We liked it - especially the standing room 19 - so much that we stayed instead of the planned 1 night, 5 nights.

The help was wonderful. But i couldnt not add my senior pass to get the half off price. Otherwise all was good.

Had not ventured into this area of new mexico and it was a great find! Tent camping area is the best, showers were cold for several days until it got worked out. Bummed that i plugged my storage block in the bathroom outlet and parked my truck, walked back and within 15 min it was gone! For a traveler this was crucial for my phone. But the hosts were super nice, and made some new friends! Distance to town 4 miles, to Capitan and surrounding areas all made great day trips. The library in Carrizozo is terrific. Being my stay was during govt shutdown, as a NPS Park Ranger it was a welcome reprieve.

Amazing camp ground! Very clean with restrooms and showers(lit up at night too so easy to find). Stopped by the bookstore…the lady was so helpful and friendly. There are two trails to walk…one is paved with information about the volcanoes and flora/fauna; the other is well maintained gravel encompassing the campground. Would highly recommend!
