During our 12 day stay the end of August, there were daily encounters with bear by campers. They were not afraid of people and wandered into campsites while folks were present, broke into host outdoor refrigerators 3 times, and ransacked another host’s outdoor tent kitchen. Their presence was noted daily as they wandered throughout the campground. Our dog fortunately barked and startled it away from our site both times it tried to visit. I pray something is done to run these bears back into the hills before someone is hurt.

Excellent tent camp sites some of which have been recently renovated with new picnic tables and small gravel to keep mud down when it rains. The bathrooms which feature hot showers were the cleanest we have ever experienced and we have been going there each summer over the past 10 years. One thing we did not enjoy is an apparent new allowance of RV's with their loud generators at sites designated for tents only.

We stayed in the tent section site 57. It was clean upon arrival and convenient to the bath house while still having some privacy to the sites around it. We only stayed one night as we were traveling through but we will definitely return for another stay!

From Franklin, North Carolina, take U.S. Highway 64 west approximately 12 miles, passing through Winding Stair Gap. Near the bottom of the mountain from the gap, turn left on West Old Murphy Road (State Route 1448) and watch for a directional sign for the campground. Go 1.9 miles and turn right on Forest Road 67 at the Standing Indian Campground sign. This is a paved road. Go 1.7 miles and turn right into the campground.
The campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 64, which is approximately 12 miles from Franklin, North Carolina, and connects to State Route 1448 (West Old Murphy Road) leading to the campground.
