Ocracoke Campground

It is very beautiful, and the beaches didn't have many cars. I am not sure if it was because it was off-season, but I really liked not having any cars on the beach. The campground was great, but several people had very loud generators running all day.

Its a beautiful place and excellent campground. We love it and camp every year. Only suggestion, I want to give is installation of a small board near/ over sinks in the bathrooms for us to put phone and other small items while using restrooms.

Love Ocracoke!!

The campground was almost empty all week (week before Labor Day weekend). Well maintained and very clean. Super easy access to the beach over the dunes.
Many of the sites on the ocean side have shrubs around them, so wind and privacy wasn’t an issue. But you also won’t catch a breeze at night. Lots of grass throughout the campground too. Water is located near the bathrooms/showers, and the showers are cold water only. Biting insects of course at dusk and dawn, so bring your bug spray.

One star, and that star is for the stars. They were genuinely beautiful.

We really wanted to like this place. It looked fine when we arrived in the morning. But once night fell, it became the worst night of camping we have ever had: no-see-ums. These biting insects are barely 1mm big, so small we first thought the bites were in our heads, and they poured through our tent vents in swarms. It was raining and hot (around 95 degrees inside the tent), so sealing up was not an option.

We tried retreating to the car. They followed us. We spent an hour killing them before giving up on sleep entirely. No campfire allowed, so no smoke to drive them off either. We left with 100+ bites each (they swell up like mosquito bites) and spent the following days bathing in calamine lotion.

We did wear bug spray. A local told us only industrial strength DEET (40%+) stands a chance, and when they swarm there is not much you can do except get eaten. We would have left, but you cannot leave the island without the ferry.

Heads up for future campers: there is no cell service on the island (at least on T-Mobile) and no Wi-Fi anywhere, so plan accordingly. You will be asking your neighbors for help the old fashioned way.

On the bright side, it was a real trauma bonding experience. If sleepless nights are your thing, this is the place.

Labor Day weekend - perfect weather, a little breeze. Spot D009 was great - quiet, a nice breeze so not many bugs, but spurs were a pain. Pitched the tent at the back of the spot in the sand. Easy beach access (follow the path literally right over the dunes).

A very quiet campground with meticulously cared for grounds and clean facilities. It has GREAT access to the beach with a short walk. Loved it!

Typical Ocracoke except mosquitos traded for no seeums. We were a little earlier than usual and it was pretty warm and humid.We were fortunate to see a rocket launch and a turtle nest necropsy.
