For people visiting the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Cottonwood Campground is a great place to stay. Located five miles (8 km) from the entrance to the South Unit of the park, the campground is open year-round. We were in site 09 by the creek. It’s a gorgeous spot and a very pretty campground, but lots and lots of bugs, especially during midday. We also saw Bison walking around the campground so be safe and give them their space!
I would recommend bringing a headnet or mosquito net to this campground.

Very pretty campground, but lots of bugs! When at site 29 we were quite far from the restrooms. The campground map on the park website has a bathroom in the upper half of the north loop, but that is under construction and not yet accessible. If proximity to restrooms is important to you, choose a site in the lower half of the north loop.

Large, relatively level campsite. Very quiet except for animal sounds which one would, should, expect. First dry camp experience but with minimal generator use all went well. Looking forward to similar experiences elsewhere.

love this national park! and a really convenient campground to the park. Checking in w/reservations is so easy. the campsite itself was fine, not super special - smallish. the river is really pretty and we saw wild horses there at sunset. didn't see the buffalo herd in the pictures, but did see buffalo droppings in the meadow there.

Beautiful site along the Little Missouri River. The nearest bathhouse was closed during our stay, but the other in the loop was open and available.
