About Willow Prairie Horsecamp

Willow Prairie Horse Camp is nestled in tall timber at an elevation of 4,400 feet just southwest of Mt. Mc Loughlin, near a beautiful meadow. The camp was converted to a horse camp in 1990 with the addition of 19 miles of interconnecting horseback riding trails. The renovation was made possible through a partnership between the Forest Service and the Coalition of Equestrian Clubs, which provided much of the labor for this wonderful facility.

We camped for the first time at Willow Prairie in mid-July. The camp itself is easy to find, is well-maintained, and a very pretty area. We really liked that the sites were not too close together, there were several great horse troughs close by, the bathroom was kept very clean, and the corrals were in good shape overall. The trails were fun with lots of options, and the free trail map (we used Avenza to download) was fantastic. The roads to camp were primarily paved, which is nice. We stayed in site #5 which was easy to back into and set up our LQ with awning. What could have been better: to make the site level it has been bermed so there is a huge step down to the area of the picnic table and firepit, which we ended up not using. The corrals have chain "gates" which did not seem very safe so we added webbed stall gates. We experienced weather in the mid to upper 80's and since the parking site gets full afternoon sun it was very warm. Fortunately the corrals are mostly shaded, so we were happy about that. Overall, a very nice camp and site, and we had a great time.

This camp is well planned for enjoying time riding and camping with horses. The sites are large with several sites large enough to park two LQ trailers. There are 3 stock water troughs placed throughout the camp. Riding trails take off right from camp with many loop trails available. Most riding is in the forest and meadows. Some rode riding is also available. Cattle are free ranged in the forest during the summer months. Camp and trail maintenance is done by many local volunteers and horse groups.
