What Guests Are Saying
Shadow Bay campground offers stunning views of Waldo Lake and well-maintained, spacious campsites that are generally private and family-friendly. Many campers appreciated the friendly and helpful camp hosts, as well as the beautiful scenery and hiking opportunities. However, there were significant concerns regarding the lack of potable water, unpleasant bathroom conditions, and issues with reservations, which could benefit from better communication prior to arrival.

This was our first trip camping at Shadow Bay. The view from the lake was amazing. The campsite are also great, private and well maintained.
Our only problem was that there was no communication to let us know that the water was off!!

Perfect weather in late July - but bring a bug tent to hang out in. We had previously visited in August or September and the water was on - this time it was not, so make sure to bring plenty to accommodate dish washing. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Camp hosts made the rounds and were very helpful.

Campsite was super nice, and the host was attentive. Neighbors were pretty loud, but fortunately not until too late. The dreaded mosquitoes were not too bad this year (late July). Hiking around the lake was magnificent. Plenty of fallen branches and logs to supplement the wood we brought for the fire pit. Will definitely visit again.

We booked site 78. Advertised and charge as a "double site" for up to 12 people. In no way is this site big enough for 12 people.

It seems not quite as clear as in the past, perhaps because of the burns, but it's still very clear, cold and beautiful. The campsites are well maintained but there was no running water this year. Fortunately a friend notified us to bring water. There was no potable water during our stay last year. It would be great to be able to be officially notified about the status of the campsite before arriving. But with recent cuts I doubt that's happening any time soon.

This review is not for Waldo Lake, which is always amazing. Loop C is a group reservation site. It would have been great if somewhere in the confirmation emails someone would have mentioned the lack of all water at the campground. Understandable problem that would be much more manageable for campers if they were noticed before arrival.
The bathrooms in C are the worst you e ever smelled due to the nonfunctional composting design. You can last about 10 seconds of breathing the ammonia before you have to get out. One of them was closed. Despite booming all the sites in the loop, one was marked as reserved so that a picnic table could have no essential work done on it. In fact, the camp hosts were unaware of our reservation entirely and we constantly fended off people pulling through who thought it was ope . About half of the sites in C are only good for RV pull-ins, and offer not much in the way of appealing tent space. There were noisy chainsaws at 8-11 am on one of the days. There are 5 or 6 gems for camping in the loop, and the rest are super meh. All in all, with no water/no notification, unusable bathrooms, no hosts who knew we’d reserved it, and one site closed, I’m not sure what we were really paying for as far as camping??
But the lake was amazing.

As advertised, but no potable water and one of the 3 restrooms nearest to our site was not in order, which caused a short occasional wait. Overall the site was in good shape--the dishwater pits are ...interesting. Waldo was great, it seems very family friendly, so don't expect a quiet stay in the woods. It was a short walk to the water with our paddleboards, which is what we'd hoped for; the camp host did a nightly lap to checkin with sites, and was cordial.
