About Congo Gulch

Congo Gulch is an old Forest Service cabin that allows guests to relax in the outdoors and step back in time to when the cabin was used during bygone gold mining days. It is part of the Fremont Powerhouse complex, a hub for mining built in the early 1900s. As one of four cabins located at the site, the cabin offers flexibility for large groups. Guests can rent all cabins and also pitch tents in the grassy yard. The surrounding valleys once teemed with mining activity, primarily gold. The Fremont Powerhouse was built in 1908 as an economical method for mining. Two dams were constructed at Olive Lake, and water from the lake was piped through an 8-mile wood and steel pipeline to the powerhouse to generate electricity. Homes were constructed to shelter workers who monitored the pipeline. Today, these same shelters are available as recreational rentals. Congo Gulch is named for the small creek that runs beside the property. Winter access may require skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles.

What Guests Are Saying

Congo Gulch offers a fantastic blend of modern amenities like electricity and running water, while maintaining a rustic, secluded atmosphere. Guests appreciate the informative caretaker and the nearby Olive Lake, which features a scenic 3-mile hike. Although there are some issues with mice and squirrels in the attic, overall, visitors have consistently enjoyed their stay and found the site well-stocked and engaging.

We rented this cabin for our yearly family get together and it mostly fit the bill for accomodating my large extended family of 9 plus several dogs. And although there were plenty of beds for everyone, the house itself was a little small for all of us. Not to mention there was only one indoor bathroom. However, we knew this when we rented it and banked on the fact that there was a vault toilet outside that we could use as overflow if needed (which we definitely did).

We were happily surprised to find out that there is an extra "storage room" off of the kitchen that has a second empty refrigerator. This came in very handy for my family that came lugging in several ice chests and food containers. Also, we REALLY appreciated the fan that was left in the kitchen area. The week we were there temps reached 110+ degrees and it was a real struggle to stay comfortable, especially in the upstairs bedrooms. I recommend bringing a couple personal fans and some cotton sheets for sleeping if you plan on visiting in the summertime.

Overall it was a nice little rustic cabin. I would recommend it for smaller families (4-6) and in cooler weather.

Two star is considered "fair" -- not bad. I'd consider this a fair experience. It's a cozy place. Good amenities. Workable kitchen and common area. The bedrooms are interesting. We probably won't be back to this location.
