About Chilhowee Campground

Located in the Chilhowee Recreation Area, Chilhowee Campground offers a multitude of camping opportunities for both RV and tent sites, many with electric hookups. The day-use area includes McKamy Lake, a swim area with sand beach, picnic sites, a group picnic area, and a bathhouse.  Be Aware; Do not use GPS directions: GPS coordinates will direct you up Benton Springs Rd. This route is not recommended. We recommend using Forest Service Road 77 to reach the recreation area. It's important to note, this facility requires driving 7 mi up to Chilhowee Campground on a narrow, winding road. Do not use the Benton Springs Access Road to the campground as this is an unpaved and dangerous road for RVs. Inexperienced RV drivers may have difficulties getting to and around the site.

The camp host was very friendly. The walkway to the bathroom in loop A is a mess It needs to be replaced I use a walker and it was very difficult for me to get to and from the bathroom. I don’t think someone in a wheelchair could do it at all

Camping pad was full of grass, had to weedeat it myself. Grass grown up everywhere. Beach isn't even soft anymore, has tons of grass growing in the sand. I was hoping to give my kids the same experience I had when I was visiting at their age. Huge disappointment

All roads including entrance roads were newly paved and provided excellent walking & bike riding. Restrooms and showers were clean. Beach and lake were very nice, clear water and sandy. Picnic area and restrooms nice a well maintained. Definitely will stay here again.

Was very disappointed to see the overgrowth on the road up to the campground. It was hard to see where the road sides were. I haven’t been up there in a couple years and was really surprised by the lack of maintenance on the road and at the gazebo. The roof is caving in and the graffiti is overwhelming. I’m sure the cuts the present administration has invoked is part of this, but again was very sad at the conditions that are currently present.

I love this campground. The bathrooms are well maintained, and the park is very nice with a lot of hiking trails. My only complaint is that the host in loop "E" left their lighting on all night long. It was excessive.
