What Guests Are Saying

Thunder Rock Campground is praised for its clean facilities, beautiful riverfront location, and friendly camp hosts. Many visitors enjoyed the variety of outdoor activities available, such as hiking, biking, and rafting. However, some concerns were raised about maintenance issues, flooding risks at certain campsites, and the lack of basic amenities like hand soap in restrooms, which could enhance the overall experience.

We love Thunder Rock campground. There is so much to do there like, swim in blue hole, mountain bike, white water raft, paddle board, float the river and hike. It’s quiet and peaceful and we love our camp hosts, Barbara and Fred. They were friendly and exceptional camp hosts in every way.

Great experience. Nice area. Great trails. Bathrooms, especially showers could use a good cleaning.

Nothing negative. Just an overnight stay on the way to the Smoky Mountains. I would like to come back and try the mountain biking. I was not aware that was available here. Nice bathrooms. Beautiful area. Nice host.

Stayed over the 4th of July weekend. Everything was good at the campsite. Bath house was clean and in good working condition. Camp hosts were friendly. No cell service which should be no surprise given where the campground is located. It was a good reason to disconnect and play games instead. Will be back soon!

This is a nice quiet place to spent the night. Only one campsite with electricity, we were able to reserve it and loved the stay! Our camper is a 34' trailer; it's a little tight getting it in there but doable. Would definitely stay there again!

I have been camping at Thunder Rock for many years, and overall it remains one of my favorite places to camp. The campground is beautiful, the location is outstanding, and it is hard to beat being right on the river. Unfortunately, this year's experience raised some serious concerns about campground management and more importantly camper safety. One issue was the apparent lack of on-site oversight. During our stay there was not a full-time campground host available. My greatest concern involves camper safety. On the evening of 2 August, at least two campsites flooded after water levels rose significantly. I have never seen the water release so high. I was camping at Site 10 and the water came within about a foot of the wooden boarder. Two neighboring campsites were completely flooded with several inches of standing water, forcing campers to scramble to move equipment and deal with rising ware in the dark. What troubled me most is that no one from the Forest Service came through to warn campers. Had we received advance notice many of us could have moved vehicles, equipment and personal belongings before flooding occurred. Providing timely warnings to campers about known or anticipated flooding conditions should be a fundamental safety responsibility. The lack of communications placed campers and their property at unnecessary risk. I sincerely hope campground management reviews its emergency notification procedures and develops a process to campers whenever elevated water releases or flooding conditions are expected. Doing so would greatly improve safety while preserving what is otherwise one of the Tennessee's premier campgrounds. I fully intend to return because I truly enjoy Thunder Rock but I also hope these safety concerns are addressed before another incident occurs.

This is my second time here and it’s an awesome campground. Easy access to so much to do on the river. I do wish there were a playground but it was still awesome.
