Just a half mile walk to a trailhead linking to Blue Heron Loop trail. Or you can drive to a trailhead. Nice facilities for those tenting or preferring to use them. A bike repair station is even provided. Overall a very nice camping experience!

We spent two nights at campsite #30 in mid October. Overall the visit was quite pleasant. The campsites are clean and well maintained. Each campsite has a fire ring with adjustable grill, water, 30 amp electricity and a picnic table. The bathroom and shower facility was exceptionally clean and had plenty of hot water for showering as well as hot water, soap, and paper towels at the sinks, unusual in my experience. There are hiking trails with beautiful vistas of the Big South Fork nearby and an interesting outdoor museum documenting early logging and mining activity in the area. The only negative I have is the asphalt parking ramp for our site was relatively short and steeply inclined fore and aft and mildly so sideways making it difficult to impossible to level our truck camper. I set up the camper on the level gravel area to the side and was later told this was not permitted, that that area was only for tent campers, a real hassle.

We enjoyed 3 nights at Blue Heron
It was conveniently located and allowed us to visit a number of places in Big South Fork NRRA and Daniel Boone NF. AND the price is right, with our Lifetime America the Beautiful Senior pass it was just $10 a night!

The first day was very rainy, but other than that it was a great camping trip. The leaves were falling and the hike to nearby Blue Heron Overlook was spectacular.

Such a lovely, quiet little campground! It was easily navigable with our big trailer. Sites and the CG were clean and well-kept. We also thoroughly enjoyed hiking the nearby trails. Can’t wait to come back!

Felt a little crowded and our site didn't feel very private, but since we were on a campsite on the edge, we could look out at the trees, which was lovely. Amenities were very clean and comfortable.

Stayed a week at this campground in October, 2020. It was crowded on the weekend but not at all during the week. Even when full, the campground didn't feel overcrowded. The sites are rather large though the driveways tend to be on the shorter side. It is close to Blue Heron mining camp and to the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, which was a very enjoyable trip, even though it only goes as far as Barthell mining camp this season due to a slide on the tracks. There is also great hiking nearby. Will likely return next year.

General
- Black bears and other wildlife frequent this campground. Please keep in mind that “food” to a bear includes any item with a scent, regardless of packaging. This may consist of items that you do not consider food, such as canned goods, horse feed, bottles, drinks, soaps, cosmetics, toiletries, trash, ice chests (even when empty), and unwashed items used for preparing or eating meals. All these items must be stored properly. --Secure coolers, grills, cooking utensils, horse feed, any food not in use, and anything with food odors inside the locked compartment of a vehicle or trailer or a bear proof storage locker if available. Food storage lockers each measure approximately 29" deep x 38" wide x 43" tall. --Wipe off picnic tables and grills. Properly discard aluminum foil used for cooking. --Avoid burning garbage in fire rings because it will leave behind grease and food scraps. --Always discard all garbage in wildlife proof trash cans or dumpsters. Keep a clean campsite. --Do not hang garbage from lantern poles. Following these guidelines will keep you from getting your property confiscated from your campsite. We appreciate your cooperation.
- This is a hazardous tree area and branches may fall at any time; use caution when selecting a place to camp
- A Tennessee or Kentucky fishing license is required to fish in the main river of the Big South Fork
- Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more.
- Ay group larger than 25 persons wishing to participate in any activity in the park in which members of the group will depart from an established road and/or parking area must first obtain a permit for such activity. More information can be found online at www.nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/special-use-permits.htm.
- Please be advised that an approved Permit or Authorization by the superintendent is required before providing business services within Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. This includes services such as RV or tent delivery and setup, firewood sales and delivery, shuttle and transportation services, guided hikes, guided floats, and similar activities. To apply for a permit, please visit our website at www.nps.gov/biso and navigate to the "Doing Business With the Park" section. There you will find application forms, instructions, and contact information.
