About Chisos Basin Campground (Big Bend, TX)

Chisos Basin Campground, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is the most sought-after campground in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5.4 ft. (1646 m), the campground is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs and is conveniently located near some of the park's most spectacular and popular trails. This campground offers excellent views and mild temperatures. Also found in the Chisos Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park. Important: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 ft and RVs over 24 ft are not recommended, and will not be accommodated. No RV parking is available at the group campground, nor is generator use allowed. All sites where you may have a generator are now reservable. If you need to use a generator and you do not have a reservation in a site that will allow generator use, you will need to camp elsewhere.  Note: Campsites are small, rocky, and not level, so there are very few sites truly suitable for RVs. Many sites will allow an RV/Trailer/Van/Camper, but you will not be able to get level. The campground is almost always full, and if the site you booked doesn’t work, in all likelihood you will NOT be able to switch sites, and will either have to make your site work, or find accommodations at another campground. It is necessary that you carry some form of leveling blocks/devices with you. Please carefully review the site details before making a reservation.

Site was situated to take advantage of incredible views. Very grateful for the shaded shelter over the picnic table. Site was very clean and close to two of the trailheads which was super convenient. Camp ground hosts welcomed us and were very friendly.

The evenings in Chisos Basin Campground is why we reserved this campsite during a new moon in September. Yes the desert floor was in the 100's but the evenings were 60's and the sky was unimaginably beautiful. While there are 60 campsites that were mostly full it was quiet and peaceful. Worth every effort to spend 2 nights and enjoy the milky way. During the day we did light hiking due to the temperatures, the scenic drive we took on a suggestion from one of the park rangers was perfect. Saw so much natural beauty. We even had a serendipitous moment off of the Ross Maxwell scenic dr when we stopped at Homer Wilson Ranch Overlook. It is about a .5 mi hike down hill from the lookout to the historic stone ranch house. We had cloud cover at 2pm and a light rain that made the desert come alive with all the good smells and the temperature dropped from 103 to 96. Perfect. It was amazing! Couldn't of planned it. I will definitely be returning to Big Bend to experience it in the winter months. :)

Was a very nice campground. However, if you’re looking for privacy, it does not give much. Camp sites are right on top of others. But other than that, it was a great campground.

We were in the tent camping area.. the site directly across from the bathrooms.. we loved our time in Big Bend.. the parking was a little strange in the campground but that may be the only real downfall.
