Chisos Basin Campground, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is the most sought-after campground in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5.4 ft. (1646 m), the campground is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs and is conveniently located near some of the park's most spectacular and popular trails. This campground offers excellent views and mild temperatures.
Also found in the Chisos Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park.
Important: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 ft and RVs over 24 ft are not recommended, and will not be accommodated. No RV parking is available at the group campground, nor is generator use allowed. All sites where you may have a generator are now reservable. If you need to use a generator and you do not have a reservation in a site that will allow generator use, you will need to camp elsewhere.
Note: Campsites are small, rocky, and not level, so there are very few sites truly suitable for RVs. Many sites will allow an RV/Trailer/Van/Camper, but you will not be able to get level. The campground is almost always full, and if the site you booked doesn’t work, in all likelihood you will NOT be able to switch sites, and will either have to make your site work, or find accommodations at another campground. It is necessary that you carry some form of leveling blocks/devices with you. Please carefully review the site details before making a reservation.

Chisos Basin Campground offers breathtaking views of mountains and the Milky Way, creating a stunning backdrop for camping. Reviewers praise the cleanliness of facilities, helpful and friendly staff, and the peaceful environment, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers. While some mention issues like gnats and limited shade, the overall experience is highly recommended, with many eager to return for future visits.
Campground was great. Very pretty area. Bathrooms were good. Close to the lodge restaurant and the camp store. The only complaint would be the camp sites are really inconsistent on what they provide. Some are shaded, some aren’t. Some have shelters, some don’t. Some are off the roadway, some make you park on the road. There is no real good way to tell what you are getting until you get there.
Awesome park! Campsites were quiet, clean, and organized. Park rangers readily available and helpful. Bathrooms and facilities clean and upkept. Trails easy to follow and maintained. Already booked another adventure there!
Not typically one to leave a review, but what an amazing campground. Kim, Jeff, and George were some of the best camp hosts I have ever stayed with. They are extremely knowledgeable about the entire park and area, and eager to give advice and tips. I’ll be back next year to see them again!
We arrived late and didn’t get to enjoy the trails as we only stayed for one day, but Camp Host Kim made sure we got a campsite with a covered picnic table as we booked a campsite without one. She went out of her way to ensure we would have some shade from the heat as the temperatures were going to be over 100. Sounded kind of silly at first, but it really made all the difference! All the park staff were very friendly and helpful. The campsite had beautiful views, was very clean, not run down. The camp hosts checked on us a couple of times during our stay to make sure we were ok.
Park staff stressed not to leave your food or trash out/unattended due to bears. The whole park was beautiful, but what stood out was how wonderful the park staff was. Our stay was short, but very memorable. Can’t wait to come back again!
Both the park and the campground were nicer than we expected, despite the plus-100 degree heat everyday. My wife and I were particularly impressed with the very friendly and helpful campground host, George Hazelhurst. While we camp fairly frequently in hosted-campgrounds, we seldom have interacted with the campground host other than to check-in in to our camping spot. George came by our campsite on is own and entered into a very informative and fun discussion about the park, his job, and his experiences at the park. He was just tremendous! For an unpaid volunteer, he was more than anyone could have expected or have hoped for!
It was the last days of May and turned out to be too hot to be in camp during the day. Once you had shade it was fine except for the flies which were persistent and plentiful. Friday night the 31st there was a large group of kids on the opposite side of the campground from the hosts that were obnoxiously loud until the early hours of the morning so I had to screw my earplugs in real tight. All that having been said, the Chisos Mt. Campground is beautifully situated and has always been a very special place and the campground hosts were very friendly and I'm sure would have intervened with the loud noise but I was too tired and it was too late to get out of my sleeping bag.
