About Chisos Basin Campground (Big Bend, TX)

Chisos Basin Campground, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is the most sought-after campground in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5.4 ft. (1646 m), the campground is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs and is conveniently located near some of the park's most spectacular and popular trails. This campground offers excellent views and mild temperatures. Also found in the Chisos Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park. Important: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 ft and RVs over 24 ft are not recommended, and will not be accommodated. No RV parking is available at the group campground, nor is generator use allowed. All sites where you may have a generator are now reservable. If you need to use a generator and you do not have a reservation in a site that will allow generator use, you will need to camp elsewhere.  Note: Campsites are small, rocky, and not level, so there are very few sites truly suitable for RVs. Many sites will allow an RV/Trailer/Van/Camper, but you will not be able to get level. The campground is almost always full, and if the site you booked doesn’t work, in all likelihood you will NOT be able to switch sites, and will either have to make your site work, or find accommodations at another campground. It is necessary that you carry some form of leveling blocks/devices with you. Please carefully review the site details before making a reservation.

This is one of the more cramped campgrounds of the NPS. If you plan to stay a bit cooler in the warmer months, or intend to hike the popular trails from Chisos basin this is a no brainer. But I would recommend ear plugs if youre a light sleeper. I could hear at least 4 distinct and not so distant snoring profiles (not including those eminating from our tent). Restroom facilities could use a bit of maintenance/cleaning but for the price we paid we cant complain much. Beautiful landscapes outshine any drawback in my opinion.

Beautiful spot. Come prepared with bigger and thicker stakes. Not a complaint but the floor was really hard so come prepare

Hard to book but if you get lucky enough is worth it. It’s like a corner lot so the space you get is big. No shade as seen in pictures so come with a canopy.

This site was adequate for our 25 ft Leisure Travel Van and a tow vehicle. We needed leveling blocks in the front passenger side. The shaded picnic table is nice. You are 1 site over from the dump station but no one used it and that was no problem.

i always love camping at Chisos Basin. the trail access and scenery are both great. Got a site with a shade structure over the picnic table and it makes such a big difference. definitely will be back.

Site #38 is great if you have a family-size group. There were six of us and we were able to easily fit three well-spaced tents on the site. The picnic table has a roof over it and there are a couple of shade trees. It's very close to one restroom, but not so close that the noise bothered us. It's also within easy walking distance to the other restroom. Camp host Bill was very nice and even lent us some tools to help us pull out our tent stakes when we left. If you only have one tent, I would highly recommend site #49 for its beautiful view and proximity to a restroom. But #49 is one of the sites that can only be reserved with two weeks' notice, as opposed to six months' notice on most of the other sites.

Beautiful experience with only one exception… the camp host or park host approached us the wrong way when we arrived.. nowhere in the advertisement or website stated no shower tent was allowed which I am fine with but instead of approaching us and saying hello and welcoming us he came barking orders and it was not polite.. I was close to telling him off but I kept it professional. I was in campsite 39 and I stayed it was not for a shower it was a privacy tent for us to clean up since park has no showers .. he was just rude. I gave him and his partner a koozie from our YouTube page just to keep the peace because he wasn’t polite.. a couple days later another older gentleman came up and was very polite and admired our camp set up and stated he loved our sign.. we will definitely be staying again but you definitely need to teach some of the host being polite goes a long way.
