About Chisos Basin Campground (Big Bend, TX)

Chisos Basin Campground, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is the most sought-after campground in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5.4 ft. (1646 m), the campground is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs and is conveniently located near some of the park's most spectacular and popular trails. This campground offers excellent views and mild temperatures. Also found in the Chisos Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park. Important: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 ft and RVs over 24 ft are not recommended, and will not be accommodated. No RV parking is available at the group campground, nor is generator use allowed. All sites where you may have a generator are now reservable. If you need to use a generator and you do not have a reservation in a site that will allow generator use, you will need to camp elsewhere.  Note: Campsites are small, rocky, and not level, so there are very few sites truly suitable for RVs. Many sites will allow an RV/Trailer/Van/Camper, but you will not be able to get level. The campground is almost always full, and if the site you booked doesn’t work, in all likelihood you will NOT be able to switch sites, and will either have to make your site work, or find accommodations at another campground. It is necessary that you carry some form of leveling blocks/devices with you. Please carefully review the site details before making a reservation.

The Chisos Mountain Basic is an amazing location — my absolute favorite area in the Big Bend Country. It has it all; temperate climate, views, stunning hikes for all levels. The campground is great, it has a lodge with cabins and restaurant, a visitor center AND grocery store. There’s fresh water and very nice restrooms in the campground. They even have bears in the Chisos! The ONLY thing missing is ….. SHOWERS!

The ONLY showers available in the entire park are at Rio Grande Village WHICH is on the desert floor where summer temperatures go reach 110. Meanwhile it may be 85 in the Basin, but hiking does work up a lather, and it’s a 60 mi round trip just to take a shower. So PLEASE: maybe pencil in some showers during your next budget cycle? Otherwise the Basin is amazing, and we love it love it love it!

Absolutely beautiful campground, I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Big Bend. Campsite host was very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend the Chisos Basin Loop and the Lost Mine Trail in the evening. Just make sure to plan so you don't end up on the mountain in the dark. It does get VERY windy up in the mountains, we ended up sleeping without a rain fly to prevent the tent from collapsing under the wind.

Amazing scenery, incredible star gazing. And we saw 3 different bears while out in the basin away from the campground. A lot of fun.

Definitely worth staying in Chisos Basin. The night sky views were fantastic, though you may need to give the clouds time to clear. If you plan to make the hike to Emory Peak, don't expect it to be like your average trail experience. (Don't forget to BYO toilet paper for the latrine) It was worth it, but we felt it the entire way back. Seeing a black bear did help make the return hike more enjoyable. The staff were friendly and helpful and we couldn't have asked for a better start to our anniversary trip.

Site 30 is an excellent spot. Somewhat secluded and convenient to both restrooms and hiking trails

Park Rangers are very helpful, helped us plan our trip to Santa Elena Canyon, Rio Grande Village, and to Boquillas Port of Entry. Ranger at Boquillas Port of Entry helped me get my Fanny pack back, since I left it at the PJ gas station restroom, I picked it up at PJ headquarters the next day, and everything was in my Fanny pack, we were very impressed with the honesty in the Park.

What can I say? It’s Chisos Basin!
Anyone who has stayed before, will agree, it is one of the best places to camp in Big Bend.

Great place to visit. Amazing scenery. Clean campgrounds. Made a complain on a campground park worker. Coming really early in the morning and accusing my son that he was washing dishes and left debris in the bathroom sink. Never let me talk just accused me and said “ this is just a fair warning”. Son never left debris in sink. Many others came in there and did the same but decided he wanted to be a hero in front of his lady partner. Slim native american or hispanic guy with glasses.

Campsite was efficient. The sites were a little closer to each other than I prefer the camp ground host came down and gave a slightly terrifying warning about the wild life there that kind of scared my kids… we never saw or heard any such wildlife.

The site did accommodate our large 8 person tent.

We do want to go back to big bend! We will maybe try a different campground though. This one is pretty far from the Rio grande and we would have liked to be closer to the river I believe.
