About Hanks Creek

Hanks Creek Park has something for everyone, with plenty of water sports on Sam Rayburn Reservoir and volleyball, mountain biking, wild life viewing and birding for those who want to stay on shore. The Red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species, is found throughout the forest surrounding the reservoir. The bird makes its home by pecking cavities in large, living pine trees.

What Guests Are Saying

Hanks Creek campground is well-kept and offers a peaceful atmosphere, with clean sites and decent facilities, making it a great spot for relaxation and outdoor activities. Many campers enjoyed the beautiful views of the lake and appreciated the friendly park hosts. However, some areas are in need of maintenance and updates, particularly the boat ramps and restroom facilities, which have been affected by recent flooding and storms.

The GPS shows the final destination all the way at the end of the road. There is no sign where you were SUPPOSED to take a right. If you miss it, you go straight into a small neighborhood that is very difficult to maneuver with a RV in tow.

If you hope to pick out a campsite before booking, you are out of luck here. In a week, I never saw anyone at the gate. You will not get a passcode until after you book online.

The playground is a half a mile to a mile away in the day use area. The boat ramp at the camping area is not operational.

The campground is nice enough, though I cannot speak for the restroom facilities as I never use them (I had a toddler with me).

THE GOOGLE MAPS ISSUE IS AN PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED!

This older campground seemed well cared for, but I didn’t care for it. It’s in need of updating. I stayed four nights. First, there is virtually no connectivity here. It just shows up once in a while, if you’re lucky. There is a keypad on the gate for access to the campground. That’s fine and good and I had the code, but it is old and set so low that you almost have to crawl out of your vehicle to access it. I tried three times before another camper helped me. That needs to be updated and the keypad needs to be raised higher to accommodate modern rigs. It’s especially difficult for us older campers. Also, people were allowed to park numerous vehicles at their campsites. The two sites closest to me had many vehicles parked there, and they obstructed part of the camp road.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
