About Dog Canyon Campground
Dog Canyon is a 70-mile (70.2 mi) drive from the nearest town of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is 110 mi (110 mi) from the Pine Spring Visitor Center & Campground (a 2 hour drive time).
Before booking a reservation: It is your responsibility to review all (Site Details, Allowable Equipment, Allowable Vehicle/Driveway and Need to Know) for the individual campsite. Failing to do so may result in being prohibited from occupying the site upon your arrival. Refunds are not provided by the park.
Dog Canyon Campground lies in the secluded, forested canyon on the north side of Guadalupe Mountains National Park at an elevation of 6.3 ft (1920 m). It is located at the end of NM Hwy. 137 (Queen Highway).
This quiet location is great for relaxing, wildlife watching and hiking.
The campground is open year-round and is busiest, March-May and September-November.

The scenery and campground is quiet and full of wildlife. Absolutely loved the isolation. You have to drive around 15 mi north to get cell service. The ranger station WiFi wouldn’t work. Beware of bears. Had one come into camp one night of the stay.

The campsite is primitive to say the least., but There is a bathroom with running water for personal hygiene. The real plus is you are in the middle of nowhere, excellent trails for hiking, and out standing 4 wheel park roads for amazing vistas. A little off the beaten trail, but worth the effort. Good luck and stay safe.

We got there late at night so it was hard to tell where to camp. It was a beautiful place but not a whole lot of folks. I think only one other camper. The only down fall is that the camp sites are away from the parking lot. If you could drive up it would be nice but I understand. Overall nice

We had a party of three staying two nights in late June. We saw three beautiful black bears during our stay. The amenities were clean and it was awesome to have running water. Beautiful part of the Guadalupe National forest!

Had a nice tent campsite with shade, but most sites are fully exposed. Not sure why they are so close together either.
We were there mid June and lucked out with the weather. There was one other RV in the park, and a day visitor that we saw. You really feel it's remote, especially without cellular service. The facilities were good, and the hikes were nice. Did not see a ranger the 2 days/nights we were there. Wifi at the ranger station didn't work. Liked the overall experience, but you need to come prepared to be self-reliant.

Getting There
From Carlsbad NM to the Dog Canyon area of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, take US Hwy 285 north to NM Hwy 137 and turn south. Travel (62 mi/62.1 mi) to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Dog Canyon entrance.

From Carlsbad NM to the Dog Canyon area of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, take US Hwy 285 north to NM Hwy 137 and turn south. Travel (62 mi/62.1 mi) to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Dog Canyon entrance.
From the Pine Springs Visitor Center to Dog Canyon, take US Hwy 62/180 east. Once you enter New Mexico, travel 25 mi (24.9 mi) and turn left onto County Road 408 (Dark Canyon road). Travel approximately 23 mi (16.8 mi) to the intersection with NM Hwy 137/Queen Hwy, turn left/south. Follow Queen Hwy 25 mi (24.9 mi) to the Dog Canyon entrance. The drive time between Dog Canyon Campground and Pine Springs Campground is 2 hours.
Use extreme caution! This is open rangeland, cattle are frequently on the roadway.
