This was not a campground. It was a small parking lot to park 4 trailers or RVs right next to each other. A picnic table was provided at the end of each parking place. The $20 fee was ridiculous. I stayed in some big private camping spots at State Parks in New Mexico for $10. I recommend building a real campground at Dog Canyon. I paid for 3 nights but left after 2 and moved to a nice New Mexico State Park.

Nice quiet, small campground. Perfect spot to chill.
Sadly, there were a few reserved sites that weren’t occupied. Reservation system is great. Let’s honor each other’s desire to stay here by cancelling if you are not coming.

Really beautiful place. A bit of a longer drive but much less crowded than Pine Springs. Multiple trails to explore from the campground, excellent facilities (running water toilets), very clean. Most sites are too close to each other for my liking, with little to no privacy.

Dog Canyon is a great launch point for your next Guadalupe Mountain adventure. The ground campground is in great condition, the bathrooms were very clean. The trails leading up into the mountains are a little easier to climb than from the other trailheads, but the trails are not for beginners. The ground trails are easy to follow, but the rocks along much of the trail are large enough that foot placement is essential to avoid ankle injuries. The trails at peak elevations are still easy to follow, but are a bit overgrown, so wear long pants to avoid scraps and scratches.

From Carlsbad NM to the Dog Canyon area of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, take US Hwy 285 north to NM Hwy 137 and turn south. Travel (62 miles/100 km) to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Dog Canyon entrance.
From the Pine Springs Visitor Center to Dog Canyon, take US Hwy 62/180 east. Once you enter New Mexico, travel 25 miles (40 km) and turn left onto County Road 408 (Dark Canyon road). Travel approximately 23 miles (27 km) to the intersection with NM Hwy 137/Queen Hwy, turn left/south. Follow Queen Hwy 25 miles (40 km) to the Dog Canyon entrance. The drive time between Dog Canyon Campground and Pine Springs Campground is 2 hours.
Use extreme caution! This is open rangeland, cattle are frequently on the roadway.
