Camp ground experience was good. Camp grounds are pleasant and quiet.

Beautiful campground! Very remote but tent sites are very well maintained. Heated bathrooms were surprisingly clean and having a wash station for dishes was so nice. Herd of mule deer wandering in and out of the campsite was fun to watch. Only downside is inconsiderate campers arriving after dark and then proceed to set up and cook and talk loudly until around midnight when we finally asked them to mind their volume. Everyone else we met was considerate and friendly though campsite was not full by a long shot. Definitely different than the other side of Guadalupe. The canyon is beyond beautiful and so worth going too! Recommend over crowded pine springs campsite!

The sights were beautiful. However, there were no bathrooms which proved to be very very challenging.

Love the peace and quiet of Dog Canyon. Shared the entire campground with only one other camper. So much better than the crowds at Pine Springs.

The birding is the best! The trails and area are wonderful. Our campsite #9 was good but on a strange tilt making for a sleeping experience that was at an odd downhill angle. And due to the recent heavy rains, the trails in the campground were rutted and washed out. The Bush trail was harder to get through than the Tejas because of the recent rains. Other than those minor things it was very nice for a primitive setting. Facilities were clean and the rangers were very personable.

From Carlsbad NM to the Dog Canyon area of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, take US Hwy 285 north to NM Hwy 137 and turn south. Travel (62 miles/100 km) to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Dog Canyon entrance.
From the Pine Springs Visitor Center to Dog Canyon, take US Hwy 62/180 east. Once you enter New Mexico, travel 25 miles (40 km) and turn left onto County Road 408 (Dark Canyon road). Travel approximately 23 miles (27 km) to the intersection with NM Hwy 137/Queen Hwy, turn left/south. Follow Queen Hwy 25 miles (40 km) to the Dog Canyon entrance. The drive time between Dog Canyon Campground and Pine Springs Campground is 2 hours.
Use extreme caution! This is open rangeland, cattle are frequently on the roadway.
