What Guests Are Saying

Soapstone Campground offers a pleasant and peaceful experience, making it a favorite for many visitors, especially those looking for a quiet retreat close to Salt Lake Valley. The sites are well-shaded, spacious, and located near the Provo River, which provides opportunities for fishing and exploring. However, some amenities need improvement, such as restroom cleanliness and the presence of a campground host for emergencies, as well as challenges for larger RVs regarding access to certain sites.

It's a nice campground, no complaints -- it is good for the intended users. My issues are mine alone. Camped in site 20, it is a plenty long enough for my 35 ft fifth wheel but the angle to get in and out was tricky. I had to go backwards down the one-way to make it work and try multiple times to get the angle. I wouldn't pick this site again for the tightness to get in. It also put the table on the non-door side of the RV. Overhead branches over the road would hit a full height fifth wheel's ac units. I was able to dodge branches with my slightly shorter mid-sized trailer. It's clear this campground isn't intended for large trailers, otherwise they would improve the angles to get in/out. It's a nice place for tent camping and shorter rigs.

We love Soapstone. It is always pleasant experience and a nice walk around the campground. It's always quiet and relaxing and our favorite go to spot close to the Salt Lake valley. It is a good base camp for day hikes in the Uintas.

Campground is in a pretty area but needs some upkeep. Picnic tables were almost unusable due to the weathered tops and benches with a lot of splinters. The restrooms closest to us weren't very clean and were smelly. Yes, I know they're outhouses, but somehow a lot of the other national parks/national forests have come up with a product that makes them a lot friendlier to use. I'm thinking in particular of Yellowstone and the campground we stayed at a couple of years ago in Island Park.

There's no campgroumd host on site and we didn't see anything indicating where the closest one was. In case of a medical emergency, it would be nice to have someone with the ability to summon medical help since there's no cell service. We did have my son-in-law get stung by a wasp and were afraid for a little bit we'd need to get him medical care. Symptoms subsided with a benadryl, but if it had been a severe attack it could have been a problem. Having a campground host with a satellite phone on site is almost a necessity with the amount of stuff that can happen.

We Had a medical emergency, where our 74 year old sister was run over by a 25 foot RV. After getting her breathing again we put her in the truck and headed down the mountain to the hospital for help, because there was no cell service and No campground host on-site. Recreation.gov did refund our money, However it would have been nice and much safer if there was actually a Campground host on site, One that could have helped us during this terrible situation. Campground hosts do more then just change reservation tags.

  • For First Come First Served sites, arrive in person to check availability and claim your site; reservations for other sites must be made at least 5 days in advance.
  • For more information, contact Kamas Ranger District or Utah Recreation, or visit gocamputah.com.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
