About Desolation Gray Canyons Screen Cabins

The Green River splits the 10,000 foot high Tavaputs Plateau to form the rugged canyons of Desolation Gray Canyons. Access to the canyons is the Sand Wash Ranger Station, a remote primative boat ramp and campground. While the canyons and river can be remote, rugged and beautiful during the hot summer months, Sand Wash can be overrun by mosquitos. Weather can run the gamet from hot 100 degree days with no wind, to wind, rain, or snow. Screen cabins are provided to allow the boater an escape from the bugs and weather.

The door to our cabin was only attached by part of a hinge and didn't shut. There was also a hole in one of the screened walls. The purpose of the cabins is to keep bugs out but we had to put up one of our tents inside to provide a bug free environment. We had to put up our other tent outside so in the long run the cabin was basically just useful to store our dry bags in. Such a shame since the bugs were quite thick that time of year! It was nice that the pit toilets were very clean and relatively close to all the cabins though.

I absolutely love Sand Wash. This area is a lovely, remote location and perfect for the start of an isolated multi-day whitewater river trip. The downside has nothing to do with the cabins, but if you choose a mid-summer launch date, be prepared for one of the most vicious onslaught of mosquitoes of your life. It's just the way it does and you'd be well advised to be prepared for it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a full body net and plenty of full-strength deet mosquito spray. The screen cabins make it bearable.
