About Buffalo Park

Buffalo Park is a small day use and campground park, located on John H. Kerr Reservoir. The campground is open May 1 - September 30. The Day Use Park is open year-around. Kerr, also known as Buggs Island Lake, is a 50,000-acre lake that extends 39 miles up the wooded, cove-studded shoreline of the Roanoke River in Virginia and North Carolina. Kerr Reservoir was created with the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952. Its 800 miles of wooded shoreline stretch across six counties in two states and offer countless recreation opportunities for visitors.

Buffalo Park is definitely for lake lovers! My campsite was right on the Kerr Reservoir, so I could fish and launch my kayak from my campsite. There is only one bathhouse, which was on the other side of the campground, so the Right Loop also has a toilet shack/outhouse. Every campground has a different vibe, and this is one where folks mainly keep to themselves. Seems like most people there were fishing, but it was an off weekend for catching fish.

As far as the campground, it's fine and its greatest strength is convenience to the water. The lakefront sites are not private, and the campsite had some trash and old fishing line. The folks I encountered were very friendly! The bathhouse is divided into quadrants, so each quadrant is a separate bathroom (shower, sink, toilet). I did not see any vending machines, firewood for sale, etc so bring what you need!

We always love our stay! Love that you have access to the water throughout the park and you don’t HAVE to go to the beach area. Bathrooms are private and very clean!
