About Rudds Creek Rec. Area

Rudds Creek Park is located on John H. Kerr Reservoir, a 50,000-acre lake that extends 39 mi up the wooded, cove-studded shoreline of the Roanoke River in Virginia and North Carolina. Rudd's Creek Campground is open April 1 - October 31. The Day Use Park, located across Hwy 58, is open year-around. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, was created with the construction of the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952. Its 800 mi of wooded shoreline stretch across six counties in two states and offer countless recreation opportunities for visitors.

We've enjoyed our time camping. Our site 83 had electrical issues but someone was right on it. Unfortunately the whole receptacle will probably have to be replace, but we made it work. The guys that came were so nice and awesome to work with.

Our campsite was very nice and the people working the entry gate were very friendly.

Complaints: in walking around the campground we noticed the sites are not being cleaned after people leave. There was debris such as large plastic milk jugs left in fire rings, trash as well as wood that looked like someone had broken up an old table top and left it. The people checking in that site cleaned it up and left it by the road.

Bathhouse: oh my. I went and took a shower. The stall I went in looked like someone had shaved their long haired dog in it. The floor was just nasty. This was the women’s. Trash can was overflowing in the tent area.

In the men’s there was no hand soap.

I have been camping at Rudds Creek Campground for 40+ years and have never been disappointed, the staff was excellent and very helpful during our recent visit. This Campground has always been our favorite, looking forward to our next visit.

Arrival & departure

  • The campground gate house is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. from April 1 to October 31.

Site capacity

  • Camping equipment must fit within the site perimeters and tents should have padding due to gravel bases.
  • The maximum stay is 14 days within any 30-day period, and changing reservations to extend the stay is prohibited.

Safety & rules

  • Generators and music must be turned off by 10:00 p.m.
  • Mail and packages cannot be sent to the park; they will be refused and returned to the sender.

  • Alcoholic beverages and off-road vehicles are not allowed in the campground.

Fees & deposits

  • Interagency Senior and Access Pass holders get a 50% discount on camping fees, but must be present at registration.
