This is a beautiful website that we have camped out for multiple years when kayaking on the James River. Excellent hiking also nearby. The pit toilet was in good shape with lots of toilet paper. The staff appears to be keeping up the site well.

We love this place, we’ve been coming here for years. Last year it seemed a little neglected, but they cleaned it up this year. The big fire pit had been dug out, and there were new trash containers.
The restroom was clean for an outhouse, and it didn’t smell bad. It’s a nice, modern outhouse.
This is a primitive site, no potable water, or electricity. The creek is lovely, although in the late summer it can get pretty low. The kids and dogs love the creek.
We bring lawn and board games, and just relax.
The are numerous great hiking trails nearby, including the Appalachian trail, and lots of breweries and wineries. Cave Mountain Lake Campground, another US Forest site is just up the road, and has a nice swimming and fishing pond, and showers available. There is a day use fee for the campground. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a reasonable distance away, about 30 minutes on nice fire roads. I’ve been told the Dinosaur Kingdom is not to be missed, and the Virginia Safari Park is really cool. A drive through zoo, with a small walk through section of smaller animals.
We did notice that the entrance sign and the information board were missing this year. I’m assuming they’re being updated and will be replaced.
The Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Station is nearby, oped on weekdays with lots of information about hiking trails and the Jefferson National Forest.
The best thing about this is that there are no other people there at all. Just your group, and Mother Nature.

We love Hopper Creek. Nice and shaded, clean bathroom. Only minus is the lack of potable water. Great camp!

It's a great group area that has a good, clean pit toilet. Bring your own water.

Our group had an awesome time at Hooper Creek. The toilet needed to be cleaned. The grounds are a gentle slope down hill. The warsh has exposed large tree roots, so be careful at night. The driveway and parking is nice. Quite and secluded.

From I-81 North, take Exit 175 just south of Natural Bridge. Go north on U.S. Highway 11 toward Natural Bridge (left turn facing the Exxon station). From Natural Bridge, follow Route 130 East at the intersection with U.S. Highway 11 (right turn at the Natural Bridge parking lot). Continue east on Route 130 for approximately 4 miles to Natural Bridge Station. Turn right onto State Route 759 and continue for approximately 3 miles to the intersection with Route 781 and Petites Gap Road. Continue 1.6 miles ahead on Route 759 / Hopper Creek Road. Turn left into the recreation area entrance.
Hopper Creek Group Camp is accessible via I-81, with Exit 175 leading to U.S. Highway 11. From there, Route 130 East and State Route 759 provide access to the campground.
Elevation: 337 feet
4.9 mi drive to downtown Natural Bridge Station (about 9 min)
Policies & Rules
General
- Entrance gate on State Route 759 is closed but unlocked during camping season; entry by campers only.
- Tent camping only; RVs are not permitted.
- Bear cans provided for trash. All trash that does not fit in provided containers MUST be removed and dropped off at County disposal site at corner of Arnold's Valley Rd and Wert Faulkner Hwy.
- Bears and other wildlife frequent the area: keep all food locked inside your vehicle.
- Drinking water is unavailable; campers must bring their own supply.
- Cell phone coverage is unreliable.
- No water or electric hookups available.
- No horses allowed.
- Campground will be inspected prior to arrival and after departure for trash and resource damage.
- Use of Cave Mountain Lake Recreation Area facilities requires a day use fee.
