What Guests Are Saying
The Chopawamsic Backcountry Camping Area offers clean and charming restroom facilities and well-marked campsites that provide excellent privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. While some sites may involve hilly walks, accessibility is generally good, and the area is respected by visitors. Though there are minor drawbacks like distant traffic noise and the lack of fire rings, overall, campers appreciate the secluded experience and the ease of the reservation system.

Hiking around was fine, but the area isn't nearly as beautiful as the main portions of Prince William Forest. The area was nice and secluded, and the campsites far apart. Too bad you can't make an open fire here, but it makes sense because there are no fire rings. There was a constant sound of gunshots from the nearby base. I never felt in danger, but it was a funny addition to hear the firing in the distance. I don't see why individuals have to pay extra to come to this section. I probably won't return, but it was fine seeing the area for once.

Backcountry camping was a perfect option for us as we were looking for last minute options to test some new backpacking gear. The parking area and campsite were easy to find. If you're using online maps/guides, make sure you upload them in advance as cell coverage is limited in the park. It would have been helpful to have campground info and map at the parking area. Also, be aware that although it is "backcountry" camping, there is noise from planes, the freeway, distant train, and the nearby Marine Corps base. It's not loud, but if you're expecting silence you'll be disappointed.
