About Oak Ridge Campground

Oak Ridge Campground is a 100-site, wooded campground located in Prince William Forest Park, 35 mi (34.8 mi) southwest of Washington, DC. The park's land was set aside during the Great Depression, and in 1935 the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began restoring the previously over-farmed acreage, converting it to recreational lands for public use. The CCC built trails, dams and cabins, making the park a wonderful place for recreation and relaxation. Large group camping is not permitted at Oak Ridge Campground. Please read the need to know section for additional information.

The sites are spaced well. There is a full time host in an RV parked at the entrance. There is also a nice trails near that don't brequire driving to. One with a 1.5 mi loop, with 3.4 extension loop. Than there is also a 8 mi option by happyland lake.
There are no last minute options for forgotten food or firewood. The site is the far end of prince william park and takes around 20 minutes to exit the park.

The grounds were very well kept, the setting beautiful. The campsites were for the most part nicely spread out away from each other. But even with a 20-ft travel trailer, with tow vehicle 37 ft, the majority of sites are far too small. Now I understand why they have a number of auxiliary parking lots, because many sites would require you to disconnect your travel trailer and not park on your spot. Of course you can always cheat a bit by backing up your travel trailer axle and then hang over the concrete barrier at the end of the driveway, but not always. I was forced to move temporarily to a campsite until the next morning when I had to rebook to an entirely different campsite. But again, proximity to surrounding venues, the setting, the peace and quiet, and the care that had been given to keeping the campground in good condition all make it an experience that I will return to have, now that I have driven all three Camp Loops to pick out ones that will fit me.

The camp site 2 or 3 sites over from us were drinking, playing loud music, and yelling loudly until at least 2AM. Neither park rangers nor the camp hosts came by to tell them to quiet down. Besides the troublesome neighbors, the site itself was good. Plenty of room to set up 2 tents and a hammock. For some reason there was a 1' deep hole near the end of the table that we kept tripping over.

I really enjoyed my stay at Oak Ridge, although I had to cut it short by one day due to the wildfire smoke from the Canada wildfires. It was peaceful, the sites were all well-maintained, the welcome center and rangers were really helpful, and the bathhouses were super clean. I hope I have a chance to stay at this campground again.
