About Clearwater Lookout Cabin

Clearwater Lookout Cabin is a single story, wood frame structure constructed in 1935. It is tucked at the base of the Clearwater Lookout tower, a 94-foot steel tower constructed by the Civil Conservation Corps in 1933. Through the years, the tower has been used as a landmark by the public and employees of the Forest Service. The tower is no longer manned during fire season, but it is used on occasion during extreme fire conditions. The tower is closed to public access, but the rental cabin is open year-round. The cabin is located about 25 miles south of Pomeroy, Washington in the Umatilla National Forest. Access by car is from June 1 to October 31 weather permitting. In winter, access is limited to cross country skis, snowshoes or snowmobile.

What Guests Are Saying

The Clearwater Lookout Cabin offers stunning views and a star-filled sky, making it an ideal retreat. The cabin is well-equipped with a functional kitchen, comfortable bedding, and a strong heater, enhancing the overall experience. However, some guests faced challenges accessing the cabin due to unclear communication about entry codes, which could be improved for future visitors.

A view that goes on forever plus—WOW—MANY, MANY stars. May come back with my telescope! I was terribly afraid that I would miss out on this opportunity due to govt chaos. You guys came through with flying colors. You made me proud, both as someone who’s worked with the USFS in the past and as an American who is just deeply, deeply grateful for you all making a very short respite with a few trees and a tremendous view possible! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

We were unable to access the cabin and get in and had to find another place to stay. This was partly my own fault because I didn't read the email thoroughly that said to call for the code to get in 1 week in advance. There was a number to call. but as we arrived after 5pm, no one answered and we were unable to get the code we needed to get in. I figured I had all of the information I needed in the emails they sent. It is very remote, but looked like a nice place to stay for the night. I should have paid more attention, but I feel as if it should have been more clearly and noticeably stated that I would need to reach out for the code or they should have just emailed that to me.

Excellent little cabin, nice location, convenient fridge/stove and heater on propane. Some traffic—good gravel road draws lots of passerby, the toilet block gets some public visitors by day. Nice fire pit. Two bunk beds w good mattresses. Bring water and bedding. The heater is strong. Dishes, pots and pans, silverware all included.

Great view from the cabin. The goomed trail was easy to XC ski on. We had a heads-up that the heater was temporarily broken so we came prepared and were cozy. The bathroom door had frozen partially open so there was lots of snow inside. Can't wait to go again.

Great location. Big sleeping area and good kitchen space. Public vault toilet was convenient. Gas lamps are nice but set off the carbon monoxide alarms after a few hours. Heater didn’t work which was a major bummer because it was 10-20F outside. There’s no other way to heat the cabin. We would have been in real trouble if we didn’t have 0 degree rated sleeping bags.

This cabin is stocked with almost literally nothing. Bring your own kitchen gear, matches, water or pot to melt snow, lighters, blankets, matches, pillows, matches, toilet paper, and battery-powered lamps.

Great place to spend a couple nights!
We enjoyed a wide range of weather that really kept things interesting - rain, fog, sunshine, dramatic clouds, double rainbows. Our days were spent exploring the surrounding area, doing short hikes and sitting around the fire.
The stove and fridge were very convenient. We couldn’t get the heater to light even with careful attention to the instructions and prior experience with this type of heater. Also, the gas lamps would quickly set off the carbon monoxide alarm, even with a couple windows cracked open a few inches. The storm shutters weren’t in the best condition and would smack loudly against the walls in windy weather.
That said, all the minor faults added up to a very memorable experience for my wife and I. We loved the beauty of the area and seeing the occasional coyote, deer, and song bird. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back.

This was a fantastic experience, and we hope to be able to come back at a different time of the year! Cabin was easily located, stocked with minimal dishes and basic cleaning supplies. I would recommend bringing basic oils, spices, chopping board and knives if you are looking to prepare more elaborate meals; along with water, as there is no water on site. It can sleep 4 but know that the arrangements are 2 bunk beds. There is a newer outhouse that is clean, and has a rail for those needing extra support. The views were stunning; breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, cows wandering about and heard the local pack of wolves howl during the night. Lucky enough to see a lightning storm light up the sky our last night there. Bugs weren't bad at all, and no snake sightings either! This would be a great place to bring a dirtbike, and for birders, be sure to bring your binoculars! There's a barn owl near the cabin, along with endless mountain bluebirds. A big firepit is right by the cabin, and there are so many downed trees, you can forage for all the wood around and still not make a dent. Lookout is closed to visitors, but the views were still phenomenal. This was a great experience!
