About Tucannon Guard Station

The historic Tucannon Guard Station is a charming saltbox-style cabin constructed in 1909. It was inhabited by the first ranger in the Tucannon area, William Kendell, and his family. By 1916, the guard house became headquarters for the district for two years, and then continued on as a standard guard station. Staying here is like stepping back in time. The rooms inside are nicely decorated and cozy. Touches like curtains on the windows and modern furniture add to the destination experience. Beyond the cabin is plenty of photogenic scenery, plus options for prime fishing and hiking.

We’ve enjoyed renting the Tucannon Guard Station for many years and we’ve always appreciated its rustic charm. This last visit, we found the cabin to be quite a bit dirtier than in past years. And, there are no working smoke detectors upstairs. Perhaps this neglect is due to the current funding issues. Regardless, I would hope the smoke detector issue gets resolved for the sake of safety. We left the cabin much cleaner than we found it and hope that future renters take care of it so that we can all fully enjoy its charm for many more years.

We had a great time! The cabin was charming and cozy. We were all able to hang outside in the mowed yard during the day and gather around the dining table at night. We did find somethings to be left a little unclean, but we didn't mind cleaning them.

The guard station was very roomy and provided me, in a wheelchair, opportunities to move about freely (except for the second floor). The bathroom was unusable because of its size, but an accessible nearby was available. The four of us enjoy our stay in a beautiful setting.

Wonderful cabin with the comforts of home! Property has two picnic tables, fire pit with benches, plenty of parking, bathroom with shower, large kitchen, living room, board games, and lots of trails/fishing access nearby. Despite being located near campsites, I felt we had privacy and noise separation from other recreation enthusiasts. Weather was perfect and we encountered tons of butterflies exploring the area!

Unfortunately the toilet was not working properly and the grass was overgrown. I understand it was before Memorial Day, we would have been happy to mow it ourselves so our children could run and play free. This was our first visit to the ranger station. We enjoyed a wonderful thunderstorm and great food using the kitchen appliances. We hope to be back again!

We have stayed here multiple times and each time has been pleasant. I haven’t had trouble getting into the cabin, follow the directions like this website states and call the Pomeroy Ranger District prior to your stay. The fact that we’re “camping”, have HOT running potable water, electricity, and we’re warm and dry is a real treat. There is a queen-sized bed, a twin, and a bunk bed. The futon downstairs is comfortable too. I like to take queen/twin fitted sheets from home to put under our sleeping bags to make it feel more like home. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, pots, and pans. The fridge, freezer, stove burners, and oven all worked well. There are a couple space heaters to take the edge off if needed and even a microwave to spoil you. As for the cleanliness of the cabin, that is all dependent on the renters prior to your arrival. My recommendation is to leave how you would want to find it. This cabin is unique and full of character. The living room has lots of windows to enjoy the view and that warmed up cup of joe. There are two covered porches, the front porch has chairs for relaxing. The large yard with fire ring and two picnic tables is perfect for kids and dogs. There is plenty of parking and a short walk across the yard to the cabin. Several camping sites and a vault toilet are located nearby.
