We had exceptional weather for our trip to Salmon La Sac, one of our favorite Forest Service campgrounds. Highly recommended: the round-trip nine-mile hike to Pete Lake, which is on a mostly flat trail. You'll have to drive to the trailhead (I think it was six miles total) but well worth it. Beware the mosquitoes.

Excellent campground. Good site spacing. Lots of trees and shade. Lots of river access. Be aware that there is bear danger. A bear did visit our campsite during our stay. All but 1 of the water stations was out of order during our stay.

We have been coming to Salmon la Sac for 40 years. It is definitely out favorite place to enjoy nature. Even with the numerous changes over the years, e.g. no running water, no electricity, no flush toilets, etc. we keep coming back.
Our only complaint is the reservation system. It is nearly impossible to reserve a spot during the summer. But if you put in the hours, you can do it. The very frustrating thing though is when you're there and some prime spots remain empty ALL WEEKEND. Such a waste and so unfair to those of us who do the right thing and cancel if we're not going to use our spot so someone else can enjoy this beautiful place. Sad. I'm also wondering if they did cancel but the Reserved signs aren't being updated?

Salmon La Sac is a beautiful campground. We really enjoyed our site on the Cooper River. We highly recommend the Cooper River trail to Cooper Lake! Sadly, the campground is impacted by budget and staffing cuts to the Forest Service. Only one host serves this large, 69-site campground. We did not see the host until the last morning of our three-night stay and never saw Forest Service personnel. When the host is off duty, there is no one to check and maintain the vault toilets. There was no toilet paper, garbage was overflowing the small bin in the toilet, and it was not cleaned for three days. If you camp here, bring your own t.p.!
