About Evergreen Mountain Lookout

Perched atop its namesake mountain at an elevation of 5,587 feet, Evergreen Mountain Lookout was built in 1935 for detecting wildfires. During fire season, lookouts stayed in the cabin, watching for lightning strikes and forest fires in the Skykomish drainage. Once the lookout located a fire or smoke, he or she would radio to the Skykomish Ranger Station and give local landmarks to help firefighters locate the fire quickly. During World War II, Evergreen Mountain Lookout was used as an Aircraft Warning Station, and then remained an active fire tower until the early 1980s. During volunteer restoration efforts in the 1990s, the lookout was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lookout tower is located in the Wild Sky Wilderness and must be accessed via a steep, scenic hike on the Evergreen Lookout Trail . Some amenities are provided, but guests should be prepared to pack in many of their own supplies.

What Guests Are Saying

The Evergreen Mountain Lookout offers a well-stocked facility with basic amenities like a gas stove and mattresses, making for a comfortable stay. Although the experience was slightly affected by smoky conditions, the views improved at sunset with the arrival of rain. The minimal guest presence contributed to a peaceful atmosphere, despite some cold drafts from the wind.

Stayed at the Lookout on 9/28. It was smoky due to the Labor Mountain / Lower Sugarloaf fires, but cleared out around sunset as the rain rolled in. Lookout is well stocked with some dishes, gas stove, four twin mattresses, and some random books. The wind seemed to come through cracks in the walls / around the windows making for a colder night, but overall - great experience with minimal guests! Toilet is just beyond the Lookout, down the trail to the left. There is an easy-to-miss sign showing the way.

Overall, wish it had been less smoky for us to enjoy the views, but still fantastic.

What an awesome opportunity to hike through a changing landscape, including old-growth forests, with one amazing view after another. And then the most exciting view ... the fire lookout perched on top of the mountain! It's rare to find a place where you can't see a house, a car, anything but trees and mountaintops. The most amazing sunset, and sunrise. Thank you so much for maintaining the lookouts. We can't wait to stay at another one.

We went to Evergreen in late summer and had the place to ourselves the entire time we were at the summit. The tower was well-equipped to serve my entire family (except there was no gas for the stove). We ate our fill of blueberries along the trail, so we weren't hungry.

The trail to the tower is pretty short but very steep in places, which was tough since I was carrying a baby and all our camping equipment... the drive is pretty long on the dirt road, but the road was in good condition.
