This is more of an isolated campground, being equidistant from Fence (Hwy 101) and Popple River (Hwy 139). We arrived on a Tuesday, and while setting up, were the ONLY people in the campground. Another camper (lone) arrived later, but we were the only groups there the entire week (we left on Saturday). We had one-to-two bars of cell service (T-Mobile). Write-up said only one latrine, however there are actually two. Beach is pretty decent. The lake is smallish (45 or so acres). All of the sites border the lake in one way or the other. If you like quiet, this is the place for you. Well, except for the occasional UTV/ATV which worked thru the campground (they are allowed). In fact, the ONLY major drawback of this place is the fact that no matter which direction you take to get here, you are guaranteed a 6 mi drive on a wash-board gravel road, which kicks up so much dust, that you have to clean literally everything both coming and going. Ergo, my wife has expressed that we not return (guess who mostly cleans). But, isolation and quiet? This is the place.

Campsite was great. Cell service not so much. Was able to use my Starlink. Would like to have more open sky to let the sun charge my solar panels. Great lake for bass fishing. Need a slot size to keep some.
We will be back.

Nice quiet and peaceful campground. Good bass fishing. Would like to see a legal slot size for bass to keep under 14 inches. Will be back. Mosquitoes were bad. Cell phone service very poor.

We did not have a good time. It was partially the weather’s fault. It was hot, sunny and humid (87 and 75% humidity) when we went. Bugs were real bad, lots of horseflies and mosquitos. Almost no wind to keep them away. The lake is good for kayaking but not for swimming, lots of algae and bugs. The area was pretty and scenic but the forest didn’t feel… authentic.

Some national forests are like small national parks — Flathead, Hiawatha, Custer Gallatin to name a few. Some are a lot more dominated by private land and logging. This was one of the latter. So it didn’t really feel to us like an adventure

Would not recommend anything in this area. If you’re considering it, just go to UP Michigan. We liked that far better

Also would not recommend apostle islands unless you do your research. Ferry only runs twice a week, private taxis are expensive. We had to cancel that part of our trip because it was a logistical nightmare. Also $35 cancelation fee

Beautiful and quiet campsite. We were very impressed when an DNR employee came to let us know bad weather was coming. Everything very clean. We loved it.

Beautiful lake that was perfect for paddle boarding. Nice site that was semi-private, we were able to see campers on both sides. Very clean pit toilet. Nice to have a dumpster & recycling too.

If you are looking for a quiet, beautiful, wooded campground on a clear, clean lake this is for you. The amenities are limited, pit toilets and a hand pump for water so I would come prepared with bottled water and plan to cook over the open fire.

The group site was great. Spacious & private for our family camping trip. Nice amount of room for two rv's. Like the trails down to the beach and lake. Nice to have the water pump on site and the toilet also! Good cell phone reception also.

Our site was right on the shore, a beautiful view and easy access for fishing. There was plenty of undergrowth between sites, and all were shady. Mostly quiet campers, as it is 8 mi of very winding and wooded gravel road in either direction. Then there is almost nothing there. You can get ice, convenience store things, but no gas for your vehicle. Be prepared for that at the last town. Vault toilets are kept clean, with plenty of toilet paper. Water has a lot of iron, and sediment. So, you will need to let it settle before drinking, otherwise it is good.
