About Pole Creek Cabin

Pole Creek Cabin is unique in not only its quiet end-of-the-road location, but that it is also located along both a winter snowmobile trail and within the Pole Creek Cross Country Ski Area trail system. In the spring the area is full of wildflowers and wildlife to view and in the fall it would make an ideal hunting camp. The cabin was built in the mid-1950s by the E-La-Ka-Wee boy scouts for a summer camp retreat. In the early 1990s the cabin was refurbished and used as a winter snowmobile and ski warming hut. Winter access is possible from the Nordic Ski area parking lot at Forest Developed Road (FDR) 473 and Highway 16, but only by cross country skis or snowmobiles.

Visitors appreciate the rustic charm and amenities, such as a well-stocked wood supply and kitchen essentials. Got stuck in snow .4 miles away from cabin with AWD high clearance vehicle. Was able to back up pretty quickly & hike the rest of the way. Not leaving a 1 star review like so many others do for cabins when they can't make it. I called ahead for conditions and accepted the risk. People are babies.

Please note that you will not be given the code to the lock if you call more than 72 hours before arrival.

Nice cabin and wood heater works GREAT! Do not overload as the walls inside are exterior siding and with modern vinyl double pane windows so it is insulated good.

Enjoyed the wood fort to the sw of the cabin people have built.

Nice setting in the woods but outside you still hear all the traffic noise from Hwy 16.

There are 2 sets of bunk beds but if 3 or more have physical issues you may not be able to get to the top bunks since there is not a typical ladder. You could use the benches at the end to climb up. The mattresses are pretty thin but work OK.

Make sure to bring lights or D batteries for the existing lanterns as it is kind of dark inside and also has the typical sooty smell of a cabin.

If you are a paranoid person this is not the place for you. None of the windows have coverings and there is no additional inside door lock. You may want to put the bench under the door handle.

The cabin needs some window cleaner if the Forest Service or a future guest can bring. It would have been an even better stay if the windows were clean.

Super good idea to have the towel rack with clothes pins by the wood heater to dry items. Wish others had that. Since I got stuck in the snow my shoes, socks and pants were soaked. Came in handy!

OK place and the woodsy setting was fine but I would not stay again. 5 miles away is the Muddy Guard cabin with electric heat, lights, microwave, fridge and a sink all for just $5 more. It does get more traffic driving by there but you also get nice views and there is a creek. Way more birds too.

Thanks Powder River Ranger District.

Did not know that in the winter with snow you are expected to cross country ski to the cabin approx 1mi. Online it only says you must walk 200m from the road.

Cabin location and setting was absolutely stunning! Firewood was well stocked, but stove was tricky to keep the cabin warm through the night. Plan for chilly mornings when you wake up in wintertime. Be sure to check out the clearing opposite the cabin area in the early morning for moose. The road to the cabin was fine traveling in a sedan because there was little snow, but check snow cover reports in the winter if you’re unsure and if your not using a 4x4 high clearance vehicle.

This cabin is in a great location! It has great skiing, snowshoeing and Moose! The directions for getting there were pretty vague and with winter snows we had some trouble finding the cabin in the dark.... So do your own research on that. Also it lacks some basic supplies that one usually finds in a forest service cabin. Cookstove, lanterns, and axe, or at least a hatchet. There was a snow shovel and one large pot for melting snow.

It is a truly beautiful place and the cabin is a warm and comfortable shelter with four single bunks. Perfect for our family of four. We will definitely be back!

Staying at the cabin is always a very relaxing peaceful getaway. I do wish there were better chairs at the cabin for lounging around. Also the was no axe this year had to go back to the truck and get mine which was ok. The gas lantern had been broken and never replace there was a battery lantern but not very bright.

Three families used for day. Took kids up in the snow sledding & snowshoeing. Built fire outside in fire ring and inside stove. Beautiful & peaceful with all the snow and trees. Thank you for stocked firewood and nice outhouse. We hope to return soon
