Don't try it without carefully researching the past and predicted weather!
Sadly, I never made it to the campground. I read the blurb about how the road requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle after severe weather events. I live a few hours away, where we are experiencing severe drought, and I have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, so I didn't worry. But after more than an hour on Fetterman Road, without having encountered another human being, the mud became so intense that it was like driving in heavy snow. The hills were getting steeper and the sky was threatening rain. I managed to turn around (with my trailer) despite there being no wide spots in the road, and made it out of there. Spent the following day cleaning inches of thick clay/mud off my car and trailer, out of my keyholes, hinges, shock absorbers, etc...
