Mammoth Campground (Yellowstone)

We love Mammoth campground, clean, concerned staff although the older campground host seemed overly suspicious when we checked in. She needs to chill a bit.

I love the level site for my 8x8 tent.

It would be great to have some facilities for dish washing as other campgrounds in the Yellowstone National Park. Given the likelihood to attract bears, we cannot wash/pour used water outside, yet we need to cook.

Realize that distances in the park may seem short....i.e. 20 miles...but that can take much longer than highway or freeway miles. Slow moving traffic ahead of you that doesn't use pullouts, bear or buffalo jams can stop you for extended periods of time. Come with patience and follow park rules about distances from certain animals, etc.

This was a great campground. The area was clean and well maintained. Restrooms were in good order. Most of the noisy RVs and youth was quiet at a reasonable hour. The staff working there were very, very friendly and our site was quite large. We used a tent and they had dedicated tent pads for our site that were soft and level. I watched other people try and pitch larger tents, and they did not fit the pad. Ours was a 4-person tent and fit just fine, that might be the limit. The fire pit was right on the driveway, so you might have some issues with smoke in your car or whatnot. The were hiking trails nearby, wildlife running through the campground and Mammoth Springs is next door. In MS you can find basic supplies and shopping, a restaurant or two and the visitor center. The actual springs are on the other side of the village so there are some good hikes with geysers. The town of Gardiner is a short drive for major resupply. Unfortunately, just after we left, major rain did a lot of damage to this area and that town…hopefully everyone is ok and they are able to rebuild the area.

It was kind of exciting as it flooded an had to leave early. I have been coming for over 6 years and have never witnesses anything like that before. In addition got to see a grizzly make a kill at mammoth campground. We had to stay in our vehicles as the bear was dragging around his kill before he was scared off. It was amazing to see nature up close. And even though the floods caused YS to close down it was amazing to see the power of nature. It will be interesting to see the changes that will be made in the coming years to the north section roads.

The campground was really nice with pull through camping. Bathrooms were very clean and nice. Would love it if they had showers. Camp hosts were very cordial and knowledgeable. We spent all our days out in Lamar Valley watching wildlife. Good spot to base out of.

We loved the ruggedness of the campground and the bathrooms were very nice. However, the tent spot was very small and our tent did not get well.

Great location — loved the smallness of the campground— camphosts were excellent!

Amazing experience staff was so nice and helpful. Im also thankful I was able to enjoy just prior to the disaster of the rain storm.
