About Williwaw Campground

Williwaw Campground, an idyllic area, sits beside Williwaw Creek near the town of Girdwood, Alaska. The campground boasts prime fishing, hiking and wildlife watching all within the Portage Valley. Next to the campground is the Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area, a top-notch spot for salmon viewing. In August, visitors can see these fish spawning in impressive numbers through the translucent waters. The area is a great place to view numerous glaciated valleys and the Portage Glacier. Over the past 80 years, the glacier calved large icebergs into Portage Lake, located just east of the campground.

Very nice campground in the woods. Space was larger than expected. All sites have heavy duty picnic tables with wheel chair access to them. Various hiking trails are accessible from the campground as well as a fish viewing site (although no fish seen this time of year). Close to Whittier as well as the visitor center. Would stay here again if in the area. We had reservations although there are first come, first sites available. There appeared to be some sites available each day we were there.

Clean bathrooms, beautiful spot, close to visitor center. We only stayed one night because it was raining so hard so we moved to a different location. Plenty of privacy . We hiked Byron Glacier and Portage Pass with 3 little kids in the rain! Amazing experiences will be back!

No problems with the camping trip. LOVED the new picnic table installed within the last two weeks. Bathrooms were very clean. They spray painted the water pump while we were there. They are doing a lot of improvements! The hosts came by to check on us during our stay. Best trip there ever!
