About Samsing Cove Cabin

Samsing Cove Cabin is located 5.5 miles south of Sitka, Alaska off Sitka Sound on Baranof Island. The log cabin was built in 1991 by crews from S&S General Contractors of Sitka and many local businesses, individuals and volunteers. Roger and Judy Sudnikovich, owners of S&S General Contractors, donated the cabin, which replaced a log cabin built in 1941 by the Forest Service and the U.S. Navy for enlisted personnel and the public. This is a remote site. The cabin is generally available year-round, weather permitting, and can be accessed by boat only, a 20-minute ride from Sitka. Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring their own amenities.

Spent 2 nights. Great place, close to town, sheltered and quiet.
Explored the forest and tide flats.
Spent a day a redoubt chasing reds.
Will be back again.

The cabin was left a complete disaster. My wife and I had to scrub down the entire place. It was full of wet clothes and gear, empty booze bottles, and other trash. The fire pit was full of half-burnt cloths, cans, and plastic bottles. In all, we picked up three large bags full of garbage.

So a bunch of dope smokers were there well after the noon check in time. We showed up and they came rolling out with speakers and a backpack. Not sure if they were there over night or just the day. They all piled in to this very distinct 35’ish foot yellow inflatable boat. All kinda odd.

Anyhow the cabin is great.

Stove was not warming the first night. Took apart and cleaned it and was better second night but probably needs to be fully gone through swept/cleaned

Great location. Far enough away from town, but close enough to get more gas.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Samsing Cove Cabin. The cabin was left in good condition by the previous users, and it was clean and comfortable. We had most of the information we needed prior to arrival. The area was private and peaceful. The sunset views were breathtaking (we were fortunate to enjoy clear, sunny days).

A few points that might help future visitors:
- the location of the "spring water" source mentioned on the website was not immediately clear - we eventually determined that it was the creek that flows into the cove east of the cabin.
- it would have been helpful to know that the best access route into the cove is from the west.
