We were very surprised to see how well outfitted the cabin was. Enjoyed hanging out on the porch after dinner and watching the horses and cows graze. Even saw a fox leaping out of the tall grass hunting. I wouldn't change a thing (except adding a broom). The lock on the gate was a nuisance (took a long time to figure it out - instructions would have been helpful).

Enjoyed the stay. Cabin is a little run down and dirty but fine for what it is. The mice are not a problem during the day but we did see and hear them every night. The privacy was awesome. Fishing wasn't great. We didn't get to see any big game in the meadow during our stay but at night we did hear some really cool howling and it is so beautiful. Overall, I will try to reserve again in the future.

Early May stay for 3 nights. Saw elk, longhorn sheep, horses, coyote?, and more wildlife. Fly fished the East Fork of the Black River every day and caught and released Apache Trout. Perfect trip. Cabin was clean, sturdy and warm. Excellent hot water, but bring a camp shower for outdoor showering/bathing as there is only a toilet and sink in the bathroom. Little cabin has everything else.

9/21 TO 9/23 The cabin was great; we saw elk every morning antelope and deer had had turkeys talking by the cabin one morning.
We appreciate the chance to stay here and would love to come back in the fall to see the colors in the trees.
Our favorite place is Centerfire Creek, we go there every year and enjoy the water and beauty of the forest.
Thanks to the NFS for making such a wonderful place available to the public.

In the middle of the white mountains miles from the closest town is this sweet cabin. Perfect to escape the rain and enjoy the monsoons roll in.

Been to the Caldwell Cabin many times before & this time it went fine. I recommend driving the 25 minutes to Big Lake if you're interested in renting a boat or kayak. Also, be sure to stock up on everything you need in food & supplies as it's at least a 45 minute drive to Alpine or Eager.

Incredibly peaceful. Deer, bighorn sheep and the osprey nest along a couple dozen birds around the cabin made for a quiet, restful week. Great cabin.

Comfy, cute cabin stocked with anything you could need. Beautiful setting. We were sad to not see any wildlife near the cabin but saw elk and antelope on the way in. We will be back!!

Caldwell Cabin is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Alpine, Arizona and is accessible via Forest Service roads 26 or 276.
From Springerville, take U.S. Highway 180/191 to the town of Alpine. Continue south on Highway 180/191 for about 15 miles, towards Hannagan Meadows. Turn right on Forest Service Road 26, at mile marker 240, and continue approximately 11 miles to the intersection. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 24 and go approximately three miles to the junction of Forest Service roads 25 and 276. Turn left and go just over a mile to Forest Road 25H. Turn left and proceed about one mile. At the sign for Caldwell, turn left. Open the gate with the combination padlock provided. The key for the cabin is inside the padlock. Keep the gate closed and locked at all times. All Forest Service roads are gravel.
From Clifton, travel north on U.S. Highway 180/191 for approximately 55 miles. The road is paved and is extremely curvy, gaining 4,500 ft. in elevation; use caution and drive slowly (allow three hours from Clifton to the first turnoff). Vehicles longer than 40 feet are not allowed on the lower portion of 180/191. Turn left on Forest Service Road 26, at mile marker 240 and follow approximately 11 miles to the intersection. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 24 and continue approximately three miles to the junction of Forest Service roads 25 and 276. Turn left and go just over a mile to Forest Road 25H. Turn left and proceed about one mile. At the sign for Caldwell, turn left. Open the gate with the combination provided. The key for cabin is inside the padlock. Keep the gate closed and locked at all times. All Forest Service roads are gravel.
Caldwell Cabin is accessible via U.S. Highway 180/191, which is approximately 15 miles north of the cabin.
